Mr. Simunovich previouslyserved as President and Chief of Staff of United WaterManagement and Services, a company that provides executiveoversight and support to all of United Water’s regulated andnon-regulated companies throughout the United States. Prior tothat, he held positions as Senior Vice President and VicePresident with United Water.During Mr. Simunovich’s tenure United Water grew from a waterutility serving 1 million people in two states to a national leaderin the environmental services industry serving more than7 million people in 25 states nation-wide. Under his leadership,United Waterhas initiated innovative, award-winning customer conservation programs andcommitted to environmental excellence through water reuse and energy from waste recyclingprograms in a number of company operations.Before joining United Water New Jersey in August 1992, Mr. Simunovich was Director of Salesfor the former Bell Atlantic New Jersey, now Verizon. He joined Bell in 1978 as MarketingManager-major accounts. In 1983 he was named Regional Staff Manager-planning and controlsand, in 1985, Director of Sales-large business, government and education markets. Mr.Simunovich began his career with New York Telephone in 1962. In addition to his position atBell, from 1985 to 1992 Mr. Simunovich was a founding member and served as President of JIIConsulting Group, a governmental and public relations firm.Government LeadershipIn March of 2002 Mr. Simunovich was appointed a Commissioner of the New Jersey TurnpikeAuthority by Governor McGreevey. Two months later the Governor selected Mr. Simunovich tobe Chairman of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. He continued to provide leadership for bothof New Jersey’s major highways under Acting Governor Codey and Governor Corzine, servingthe state through May 2007.
JOSEPH SIMUNOVICHDuring his leadership of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Mr. Simunovich directed the historicconsolidation of the Garden State Parkway with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, providingnearly $200 million in savings to New Jersey residents. He also oversaw the removal of tollbooths on the Parkway to speed traffic flow, $400 million in capital improvements to the DriscollBridge on the Parkway, and the resolution of financial and operational issues associated with theimplementation of EZ Pass, as well as the high speed EZ Pass system currently in use on NewJersey highways.Active in governmental and civic associations, Mr. Simunovich was appointed by GovernorKean in 1986 as a member of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA). He wasreappointed as Vice Chairman of the EDA by Governors Florio and Whitman for six consecutiveterms, the longest tenure in the organization’s history. Mr. Simunovich also completed a one-year assignment as a loaned executive to the Governors Management Review Commission.Mr. Simunovich was a Hudson County Freeholder for 12 years, three of them asDirector/Chairman of the Board. He was Chairman of the Bergen County EconomicDevelopment Corporation from 1997-2002. He was also a member of the Board of Directors forNew Brunswick Development Corporation, the National Association of Water Companies and theNational Council for Public-Private Partnerships. Mr. Simunovich served as a member of theLeadership Committee of the Bergen County Workforce Investment Board from 1996 to 1999.Community CommitmentMr. Simunovich currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the HackensackUniversity Medical Center Foundation. He is also Vice Chairman for the Board of Trustees ofHillcrest Health Service, the parent company of Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).He is also the chairman of HUMC’s Pascack Valley Hospital Oversight Committee, bringing highquality medical care to nearly 200,000 residents in northeast Bergen County.Mr. Simunovich served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for Hackensack UniversityMedical Center from 2004 through 2007. During Mr. Simunovich’s tenure Hackensack Hospitalhas grown into Hackensack University Medical Center, a nonprofit, teaching and researchhospital that is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in New Jersey and ratedby US News and World Report as one of the top 50 hospitals in the United States.Mr. Simunovich received his Bachelor’s Degree from Colgate University and attended FairleighDickinson University Graduate School for a Masters Degree in Business Management. He hasalso completed post-graduate coursework at Carnegie Institute and guest lectured at RutgersUniversity School of Business. Mr. Simunovich also served as a trustee and officer of the boardof New Jersey City University from 1991 to 1999.A resident of Bergen County, Mr. Simunovich is married and has two children and fourgrandchildren.7/11
