Mumford and Sons produce music based on thegenre rock/indie/folk. The whole album cover isbased on the image of a house which continuesonto the back. The rule of thirds has been usedmaking the white house central so that it’s the firstthing we look at when we look the album. Mumfordand Sons are shown in the window of the housewith the instruments that they play. The houseMumford and Sons are in is white. White suggestsinnocence, cleanliness and purity. Mumford andSons being shown in this particular house couldrepresent them welcoming the audience into theirhome which in this case would be the songs on thealbum. The colours of the houses are green, whiteand blue. These three colours are very nature-basedand simple which fit the folk band perfectly.‘Mumford & Sons’ has been underlined so that itstands out on the imaged background. The typefaceused on the album cover of ‘Sigh No More’ is seriffont. The image continues onto the back album cover byhaving the same white house as the background with astained glass window. The window could represent theaudience trying to look into the window at Mumfordand Sons, looking into their life through the songs onthe album. The serif font continues onto the back albumcover through the listing of the songs. The title of thesongs have been placed in a way that looks as thoughthey’re bricks which ties in with the whole house imageon the album. Unusually the album doesn’t followguttenburgs design principle as the barcode has beenplaced in the strong fallow area. Although as thebackground is plain white the window stands out whichmakes your eyes be drawn to it. This is a goodtechnique due to the albums song choices being placedunderneath. The cd cover is simple. Grey can be seen as a cool, mature, safe colour which fits well with the album. Mumford andSons age range is wide and so using a simple colour that willsuit all audiences is very effective.
Emilie Sande’s music focuses on soul and RnB. Thehousetyle colour used on this particular album is greyand faded. The image of Emilie Sande on the frontalbum cover uses the rule of thirds. Emilie has beenplaced in the middle of the front album cover withnothing else around her so that she is the main focusof the album. Emilie herself has been shown usingslight use of colour to allow her to stand out evenmore. The image of Emilie would make the albummore recognizable through the recognition andtherefore increase sales. Although there is little use ofcolour used on the album there are different shadesof grey which have been used. The light and dark greyhave been split so that the light grey is mainly in theprimary optical area and diagonally follows thereading gravity gradually getting darker until itreaches the terminal area. This could suggest thatEmilie’s album has a soft happy side but also anemotional sad side. The image itself looks like it hasbeen taken in the past due to their being no use ofcolour and the background looking somewhatdamaged. This links in with Emilie’s album title of‘Our Version Of Events’ which is past tense. The textused on the front album cover is sans-serif whichgives the album an informal look. The old vintage picture look continues onto the backof the album cover. As the background is quite plainand simple it makes the titles of the songs stand outmore. The song list has been placed in the middle ofthe album which makes this the first thing we see.The gutternburgs design principle has been usedhere by the song list starting in the primaryoptical/strong follow area following down to theweaker areas. The cd cover is a similar colour to the album itself, black. Theblack background allows Emeli’s name to stand out. Thesimple cd cover matches Emeli’s voice as it speaks for itself. The cd cover doesn’t need anything fancy on it as the songson the cd arewhat’s important.
The disk inside the album uses a cream colour for the baseand images of 3 roses. The roses are coloured red. Thecolour red is seen as love, passion and danger. The red onthis cover could suggest the love individuals have for LanaDel Rey’s music and the passion she has for music.Lana Del Rey’s produces ‘Indie POP’ style of music which hasa big influence on the way Lana herself must be portrayed. For example on the front cover of Lana’s album you can seehow the record label has dressed her in a vintage fashionwhich would appeal to Lana’s audience as this kind offashion is seen as being ‘indie’. The white coloured top Lanais wearing portrays innocence. The rule of thirds has beenused on the front cover. Being placed in the middle allowsLana to be the main focus and is easier recognition for theartist. A medium close up shot of Lana is used whilst beingstood in an upright position with her head tilted up. Thisposition has been chosen to give a more dominant feel tothe image. The whole album cover is based on the war andpast. The position Lana is stood in, the clothes and text of‘Born To Die’ resembles an army based image. Posters suchas ‘Your country needs you’ follow similar layouts to thisfront cover making the album more recognisable andfamiliar to audiences. Guttenberg’s design principle hasbeen used on the front album cover as ‘Lana Del Reys’ namehas been placed across the primary optical areadue to thisarea being when people look first. All of the text used on thefront album cover is written in large bold capital lettersmaking it eye-catching for the public eye. The main coloursin the image are blue, white and green which are all verynature based colours. These three colours are very positiveand all give the album a ‘fresh’ look. The large font shown on the front of the album isalso used on the back which links into thealbums housestyle. The titles of songs have beenmade the main focus by the housestyle colourblue standing out on the pale cloudy bluebackground. Guttenberg’s design principle hasbeen used again by the song titles being placedin the primary optical area continuing onto thestrong fallow area. As our eyes naturally readfrom the top left corner across the right whilstmoving down the song titles will be the firstthing individuals will see when reading the backof the album. This is an easy way for individualsto see which songs are on the album making itmore appealing to customers. In one of theweaker areas such as the terminal area thebarcode price has been cleverly placed. Thebarcode will have been placed here so that theindividual will look at the whole album want tobuy it and then be less likely to be put off by theprice. If the barcode was placed in the strongfallow area an individual may look at the pricetag and then put the album back down withoutlooking at it more due to the price being toohigh.
