  7. 7. MEDIA: ROLE IN SHAPING SOCIETY • The common people rely on media to know about happenings in the society. • Media has the power to pressurize and criticize the drawbacks of democracy. • It is instrumental in bringing about unity among the masses and is backbone of the nation.
  8. 8. MEDIA AND WOMEN • The most significant and longest social movement continuing is movement for emancipation of women. • Though the primary goal for women empowerment is to improve the quality of life of women, many other aspects have also been unfolded with the help of media. • Women are under great social control and scrutiny which has restricted what they can say and where and to whom. Cultural moves in almost every social set-up determine women’s socialization in no uncertain terms. This has an important bearing on their ability to communicate and express their thoughts.
  9. 9. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH MEDIA • Media should create awareness about risks prevailing at home, in work places and while travelling and staying outside home. • Economic self-sufficiency is necessary, though it is not a sufficient condition for empowerment of women. • Public policies are extremely important to strengthen the legal institutions that guarantee equal rights and opportunities to women. The Media should provide political and legal and economic and health awareness. • Mass Media should have the positive attitude towards life. Under any adverse circumstance they should not lose courage and confidence and try to end their life.
  10. 10. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT THROUGH MEDIA • They should provide knowledge about support groups. • Media should devote a good percentage of their programmes to create awareness among women and the society at large, give information about women's rights and machineries to approach for their all-round development. • They should set goals for their future and strive to achieve them with courage and conviction. Much developmental news should be aired through the medium of radio and tv. • The Indian media now must focus on women issues in a decisive way as their role is detrimental for the women empowerment in India.
  11. 11. MASS MEDIA STRENGTHENING WOMEN • The Mass Media, like all social media, are good and practical means to increase, through the dissemination of healthy concepts of being woman, of what is the role of women in modern society, of good examples that women give us every day, of the results they have achieved and continue to reach out to women in many fields of economics and beyond, the social consideration of women, giving to young women good ideas and examples for their economic empowerment. • The Mass Media have always unconsciously affected and influenced the thinking and behavior of society.
  12. 12. MASS MEDIA STRENGTHENING WOMEN • Mass Media could also make a strong contribution, with the implementation of media campaigns, to the dissemination of the concept of gender equality. If people see in the media the overcome of the differences between men and women will bring him back into everyday life. • New innovative decent presentation of women, based on Indian culture and society through media must be introduced.
  13. 13. #METOO MOVEMENT • #MeToo movement was founded by Tarana Burke in 2006 to help and support survivors such as dark girls and women against violence and discrimination with the help of social media to share experiences of violence and sexual assault which became prominent by tweet of actress Alyssa Milano of sexual harassment in the film fraternity in 2017. • In 2018, #MeToo movement shook India as prominent and renowned journalists, actors, and artists accused of sexual assault and harassment.
  14. 14. MOVIE: PADMAN • R Balki’s much hyped film is based on the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, called India's "menstrual man" for transforming the lives of underprivileged women who had to use old rags, sand and leaves during their periods. • Despite being peppered with melodrama and some scenes that go on for too long, the entertaining PadMan delivers a robust message -- the importance of women’s menstrual health. • The film tackles the “shame” that our society insists on imposing on periods, head on. From women being ostracised during “that time of the month” to young girls shying away from school to avoid any “embarrassment”.
