  9. 9. SIERRA HEAVY-DUTY 17 COMMANDING There’s a wealth of technology behind Sierra’s outstanding trailering capabilities. Sierra heavy- duty trucks with the optional Duramax Diesel 6.6L V-8 Engine use the Allison six-speed transmission with tap-shifting. It allows you to activate Tow/Haul mode simply by pressing a button at the end of the shift lever. This feature raises upshift points to use more of the engine’s power for strong acceleration, and raises downshift points to help slow your truck using engine braking. In addition, Grade Braking and Cruise Grade Braking are auto- matically activated in Tow/Haul mode but are disengaged in Range Selection Mode. Both features help you maintain control on down- hills. With Grade Braking, when you tap the brakes, the transmission analyzes speed, accel- eration and engine torque and, if appropriate, automatically downshifts. Cruise Braking (in- cluded only in combination with the Duramax Diesel) functions when you’ve set the cruise control, and detects when you’re accelerating on a downhill and automatically downshifts. With sturdy axles and rugged suspension systems, every Sierra model can be equipped to handle a weight-distributing hitch or, for maximum capability, select models can be equipped with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. AVAILABLE INTEGRATED BRAKE CONTROLLER Sierra 1500-series and heavy-duty pickups offer an optional trailer brake controller (above). It’s completely integrated within Sierra’s electrical system and its antilock braking system. It allows your trailer’s brakes to operate simultaneously with the vehicle’s brakes.   13. 13. SIERRA 23 CONTROL STABILITRAK® STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM WITH TRACTION CONTROL. The GMC Sierra is designed to handle curves with a firm grip, capitalizing on a wide front track and sturdy frame. That means Sierra can manage the road with handling that feels smooth and crisp, even while carrying a heavy load. A standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System makes sure 1 each tire is properly inflated for optimum handling and control, and warns you which tire is low via the Driver Information Center (does not monitor spare tire; not available on dual-rear-wheel models). In addition, 1500-series models feature the StabiliTrak Stability Control System with Traction Control (standard on Crew Cab; available on Extended Cab). The system has sensors that read the position of your steering wheel, vehicle speed, brake pressure, lateral acceleration and turning rate, then feed the data to an onboard computer. If your Sierra is not responding adequately to your steering input, the computer adjusts engine speed and brake pressure to any individual wheel to help keep you on track. Its rollover-avoidance feature can help mitigate roll forces. Its sensors are programmed to proactively predict and help counteract vehicle “tip-up” on a flat road surface. Sierra 1500 Series pickups are available with a Vortec 5.3L V-8 “FlexFuel” Engine that can run on a blend of ethanol and gasoline called E85 (because it’s 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline). E85 is an alternative fuel made mostly in the United States from corn and other agricul- tural products. The FlexFuel engine can run on any combination of gasoline and E85.
