HANDBALL
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• What is the history of team
handball?
Team handball was invented in
Europe around the 1890's. In parts
of Europe, it was played with 7
players per team on and indoor
field. In other parts, it was played
outdoors with 11 players per team.
Most describe the sport as a cross
between basketball, hockey, soccer,
and water polo.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• Handball brings together a combination of football,
basketball and netball. The game is contested by two teams
of seven players and involves one team invading another
team's territory with the aim of throwing a ball into their
opponent's goal. The game is very fast, skilful and
competitive and requires a range of physical attributes in
defence and attack. Handball is very exciting for spectators
and a typical game can generate scores of up to 35 goals
each.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• Handball (also known as team handball, European handball
or Olympic handball)[3] is a team sport in which two teams of
seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper)
pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into
the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two
periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals
wins.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• There is evidence of ancient Roman women playing a version
of handball called expulsim ludere, and similar games being
played in medieval France in the Middle Ages.
• By the 19th century, similar formal games were also being
played in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine
and Germany.
• Handball was originally played as an outdoor sport and the
first formal, international games were played between
Germany and Belgium (men's teams) in 1925 and between
Germany and Austria (women's teams) in 1930.

History of HANDBALL
• What type of sport is team handball?
Contact Sport
Handball, which can also be called team handball and borden
ball, is a type of contact sport in which two teams with seven
players each (consisting of six outfield players and one
goalkeeper), pass a ball and throw it into the goal of the
opposing team. The sport was developed in the 1800s in
northern Europe.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• What is the purpose of handball?
The objective of the game is to throw the ball into the
opponent's goal. Defenders may use their body to make
contact with attackers to prevent them from having a clear
shot at goal. Attackers attempt to break through the defence or
shoot over the top of them to score a goal.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• When did handball started?
The two countries to play the first modern international
handball game were Germany and Austria. The modern rules
of handball were actually invented in Germany, so playing a
close neighbor makes sense. While the modern rules were
invented in 1917, the first game between two countries was
not played until 1925.
INTRODUCTION
History of HANDBALL
• Where is handball most popular?
Handball is one of the most popular team sports in much
of Europe, particularly Germany, France, Spain, the Nordic
countries and the countries of former Yugoslavia
BENEFITS OF
PLAYING
HANDBALL
Handball is a great form of exercise,
for both men and women. Principally
a form of aerobic exercise, handball
helps to enhance agility and flexibility,
muscle tone, stamina, burn calories
and fat and promote cardiovascular
health.
BENEFITS
• Handball is a great form of exercise, for both men and
women. Principally a form of aerobic exercise, handball
helps to enhance agility and flexibility, muscle tone,
stamina, burn calories and fat and promote cardiovascular
health.
• Increases cardiovascular endurance: The court is 40
meters long and 20 meters wide, so players can run
several miles during each 60-minute game. This helps
increase the heart rate and boost aerobic endurance.
BENEFITS
• Teaches agility: Develops agility of hands and feet, with
sudden changes of pace and direction required. Accuracy
is also crucial. Many people compare handball to golf. Both
are extremely challenging to play well, because they
involve striking a small ball with a great deal of precision.
• Keeps you fit as you age: Hall-of-Fame NFL quarterback
George Blanda credits the sport for keeping him fit and
effective well into his 40s.
BENEFITS
• Improves mental focus and self-confidence: Being
successful is 95% mental and 5% physical. You have the
conditioning and game strategy.
• Heart healthy: Provides the body with a good
cardiovascular workout, feeding more oxygen to the
muscles via the bloodstream. The constant running up
and down the court ensures that the heart is vigorously
pumping throughout the match.
BENEFITS
• Calorie and fat burning: A University of Utah study showed
handball to be superior to racquetball–a sport that’s no
stroll in the park–in all four of the fitness indicators that
were measured: calories burned per hour (751 vs. 644)
• Develops hand-eye coordination: Learning to anticipate
where the ball will end up isn’t easy. Timing and technique
are everything.
• Teaches you to be balanced and agile on both sides of the
body: Handball develops and sustains muscles on both
sides of the body because you use both hands. Developing
coordination and power in your non-dominant
BENEFITS
• Unlike many sports, handball can be played and for a
lifetime: It’s a relatively injury-free sport. Most injuries that
do occur are muscle strains in the shoulder, elbow and
back, but those are avoidable if you follow a basic
conditioning, strengthening and stretching program.
RULES AND
REGULATIONS
PLAYING AREA
A competitive handball match is played on a large
rectangular court that is 40 m long by 20 m wide, with
a goal in the centre of each end. A competitive
handball court is much bigger than a competitive
basketball court – the outer boundaries, called
sidelines or touch lines, are longer and the goal lines
or end lines are shorter.
PLAYING AREA
PLAYING AREA
•Halfway or centre line - this line is exactly in the middle of the
two goal lines and has a spot directly in the middle. This spot is
used for starting and restarting the game.
•Free-throw line (9 m) – this dashed 'D' shaped line is 9 metres
from the outer goal line. The line is used to resume play if an
attacking player is fouled within the area.
•Penalty mark (7 m mark) - the penalty mark is used for all
penalty throws and is located 7 metres in front of the goal line
and is 1 metre wide.
PLAYING AREA
• Goal Area/Crease/D-Zone (6 m) – this area is known by a
number of different names. The D-shaped area is formed
by two connected quarter-circles, each with a 6-metre
radius. The only player allowed in this area is the
goalkeeper.
• Goalkeeper line (4 m line) – a goalkeeper is not allowed to
pass this point when defending a penalty shot.
SCORING
• In handball, a goal is scored when the whole of the ball
passes between the goalposts and travels fully over the
goal line. However, a goal is not awarded until the referee
has signalled this and they are confident that no rules
have been broken.
• At the end of the match, the team with the most goals will
be awarded the winners. However, in the event that both
teams have the same score, a draw is recorded
HANDBALL GOAL
A Handball Goal is kept at both ends of a Handball Court and are
required to play Handball. The frame of a typical Handball Goal is made
from aluminum. A Handball Goal center has a net that is securely
fastened so that a Handball Ball does not to pass through the goal. The
Handball Goal is surrounded by a line inside and only the goal keeper is
allowed inside the space. Goalkeepers cannot leave the goal area with
the ball in their hands, but are allowed to go outside the goal area to
save a ball
HANDBALL GOAL
RULES
•A competitive game consists of equal 30-minute halves with
a 10-15 minute break.
•A team cannot keep possession of the ball without
attempting to attack.
•The start is awarded to the team that wins the coin toss.
• A match begins with both teams in their own half.
• A goal can be scored from any type of throw.
• A player can run with the ball for three steps maximum.
• A player can hold a ball for up to three seconds maximum.
• A player can continuously dribble, providing they bounce the
ball.
RULES
• A player can take three steps maximum before
and after dribbling (no 'double dribble’).
• Players are not able to endanger an opponent with
the ball.
• Players are not permitted to pull, hit or punch the
ball out of the hands of an opponent.
• Players cannot make contact with the ball below
the knee.
RULES
• Players cannot dive on the floor to regain a loose ball.
• A player is allowed to use the torso of the body to obstruct an opponent with or without
the ball.
• A player cannot outstretch arms or legs to obstruct, push, hold, trip or hit.
• An attacking player is not allowed to charge into a defensive player.
• A throw-in is awarded when the ball goes out of bounds and the thrower must place one
foot on the sideline to execute the throw.
• All opposing players must stay 3 m away from the throw-in.
• All minor fouls or violations are penalised with the awarding of a free-throw which is
taken at the place of infringement.
OFFICIALS
• A game of handball is officiated by four officials – two
referees, a scorekeeper and a timekeeper. The referees are
positioned diagonally on court to observe a side line each
and, depending on who is attacking, one is called field
referee and the other goal referee.
• Officials have a whistle and 18 hand signals to communicate
the decision that has been made and use a yellow and red
system to warn or remove players.
OFFICIALS
OFFICIALS
PLAYERS
• A competitive handball team
consists of seven players per side,
with all players (with the exception
of the goalkeeper) being
interchangeable during the game.
Like most team sports, the team has
very clear roles to support their
overall success:
PLAYERS
The goalkeeper – responsible for defending the goal.
PLAYERS
• Left wing - this attacking player is usually right-handed and covers the
left-hand side of the court. In defence, they stand on the far left side
touch line and in attack they provide counter-attacks down the left-
hand side of the court.
• Right wing - has the same responsibilities as the left wing down the
opposite side.
• Left back - the left back stands to the left of the centre back and tries to prevent
the opposition from shooting. In possession of the ball they should initiate
counter-attacks and often shoot from distance.
• Right back - has the same responsibilities as the left back down the opposite side.
PLAYERS
•Centre back – the centre back stands in the middle of the
court and provides both defending and attacking options.
•Pivot - the pivot is an attacking player who travels along the
opponent's six-metre line. They must work well with their
team's centre back to initiate attacking strategies and are
required to shoot in a range of positions. In defence, they
play in front of their team and try to close down the
opposition's attacks.

BASIC SKILL
BASIC SKILLS
• Dribbling is a very important skill in handball, as you are not
allowed to move up the court without dribbling. The three-step
rule, also known as “walking”, prohibits a player from taking more
than three steps without dribbling.
BASIC SKILLS
• Throw-in is taken if the player drops the ball over the side line. •
Goalkeeper throw is taken after saving a shot by the goalkeeper, or
if the attacker enters the goal area while possessing the ball. In
mini handball, a goalkeeper throw is made after scoring a goal.
BASIC SKILLS
• Catching the ball is an essential technical element in handball.
Accurate catching is very important and ensures a fast, smooth
and efficient game. Catching the ball with two hands is the best
method.
BASIC SKILLS
• point the non-throwing arm at the target. Pull the throwing arm
through toward the target leading with your elbow and your
forearm and wrist following last and fast. Release the ball at the
highest point of jump and just in front of your head.
BASIC SKILLS
• Being able to save the ball by either catching or deflecting it will
help your team stay in the game. Defenders can also save the ball
indirectly by using their bodies to block shots from the other
team.
• Accuracy has a strong case for being the most important skill to
have in handball. Having good accuracy when you shoot will result
in a better chance of scoring, which will help your team win. When
passing, accuracy is helpful because you will aid your teammates
in keeping possession.

In handball, an athlete must
generate significant power regarding
both small (e.g., throws) and large
(e.g. fighting for a position on the
field, defence) external forces.
