Hrd 647 components of a lab report (final)
1. COMPONENTS OF A LAB
REPORT
HOW TO WRITE UP A LAB REPORT WITH EASE
2. REPORTING
• When writing lab reports, there is a specific format that scientist (like
yourself) follow to ensure success
• The format is:
• Title
• Aim
• Hypothesis
• Apparatus
• Method
• Results
• Conclusion
3. TITLE
• This gives the person reviewing or wanting to duplicate the
experiment an idea of what the particular experiment is about
4. AIM
• States the purpose of the experiment.
• Usually follows this format: To determine ___________.
5. HYPOTHESIS
• An educated guess about the results of this experiment
• Works on the cause and effect principle:
• “If I _____________, then _______________.”
6. APPARATUS
• All of the tools/ materials used to carry out the experiment
• Can vary depending on the experiment from lab equipment to
everyday tools
• E.g. test tube, beakers, safety goggles, Bunsen burners, fans,
rulers, string, pens, pencils, perfume, nuts, needles, etc.
7. METHOD
• Outlines exactly how experiment was carried out
• Is written in a step format
• E.g. Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, etc.
8. RESULTS
• Indicates the outcome of the experiment carried out
• States exactly what was observed (information gained from 5
senses)
• Can have numerical values to be placed in graphs
• Can have Before and After outcomes (color, size changes)
• Can be placed in table format because of trails carried out
9. CONCLUSION
• Answers whether or not the hypothesis would be accepted
• Detailed conclusions have: Sources of Error (things affecting
results), Ways to Improve the Experiment (how to get more
accurate results) and Anomalous Results (something strange/
unexpected that occurred)
