What is By the River? <ul><li>By the River is a new and innovative model for senior living in sustainable surroundings. </li></ul><ul><li>Mission is to provide a nurturing, stimulating home with social, emotional and environmental connectivity. </li></ul><ul><li>For 41 low-income seniors living in social and financial isolation, this is high-end living in an affordable neighborhood. </li></ul>

Aging in Isolation <ul><li>Our nation’s seniors are: </li></ul><ul><li>Forced to leave their communities to find affordable housing </li></ul><ul><li>Disempowered and marginalized in our state of denial </li></ul><ul><li>Socially and environmentally isolated causing an epidemic of stress </li></ul>The Problem

Seniors and Poverty <ul><li>Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>2009 COLA will keep 5 million seniors living below poverty line. 1 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Seniors Can’t Keep Up </li></ul><ul><ul><li>2001-2008 Medicare premiums have soared by more than 93 percent while the COLA has crept up just 19 percent. 2 </li></ul></ul>It Gets Worse

Affordable But Unavailable <ul><li>For every senior housed TEN more eligible seniors are waiting. 3 </li></ul><ul><li>The average wait time is 13.4 months. 3 </li></ul><ul><li>By the River has over 70 people on a waiting list for 41 beds. </li></ul><ul><li>It took 7 years to secure the funding required to build our residential center. </li></ul>Housing Shortage
