The “perception” paradigm<br />Logic Vs Perception<br />Logic says: “If I am right, you are wrong”<br />Perception says: “We could disagree on the same point, but still both of us can be correct”<br />Human beings, most of the times think that they are logical, but actually operate based on perceptions<br />Doesn’t mean you need to agree for anything and everything<br />This means developing understanding for others (“I got it”)<br />Opens up new possibilities <br />
  14. 14. Outside Vs Inside<br />What an individual actually says outside will be way different from what he actually feels. It takes lot of “listening” to understand the core issue for handling perceptions effectively<br />

Hearing Vs Listening<br />We communicate in four major ways:<br />Reading<br />Writing<br />Talking<br />Listening<br />Unfortunately listening is given “lowest” priority in our conversations, which creates all the issues<br />Not much formal education/coaching on this topic<br />Hearing Vs Listening:<br />Hearing – “What I want to get from this conversation”<br />Listening – “What you want to say in this conversation”<br />Listening takes lot of effort to learn and practice <br />

Same Dialogues - Revisited<br /><ul><li>“I am right, you are wrong”</li></ul>[“Looks like you have a different thinking…let us discuss and make an attempt to understand”]<br /><ul><li>“What you do doesn’t make sense; Let me do it in my own way and show you, eventually prove you are wrong”</li></ul>[“My idea is not to provide it to you; Let us see if we can make the solution by working along with you”]<br /><ul><li>“I feel victimized, situations are against me”</li></ul> [“I have a choice to respond for the situation; Let me see how can I influence others”]<br />9<br />

Complementary is a strength<br />In team having similar kind of people, will lead to failure<br />Complementary skills are required to:<br />Bring in different perspective and choose the best<br />Utilize every individual’s strength<br />Work together as a unit for delivering great results<br />Every individual has got a role to play in the team<br />Imaging if we try to (Examples from Indian Cricket):<br />Appoint Denis Lilly as a bowling coach for Tendulkar<br />Appoint Viv Richards as a batting coach for Harbajan<br />Give a lot of coaching to Munaf for becoming a wicket keeper<br />

Do you remember?<br />The case where:<br />They didn’t had any star/international players<br />Nobody expected to win even in their wildest dreams<br />Most of them were from local teams, with reasonable track record<br />They came together for the first time<br />What they did?<br />Understood each other’s strengths & weakness<br />Got the basics right<br />Do the right thing, irrespective of designations<br />Encourage & support each other <br />
