But Karan is not the only filmmaker who has added ‘Actor’ to his resume. Kunal Kohli is making his debut as a lead in Kunal and Ajay Bhuy- an’s Phir Se. Directors doubling up as actors is not a rare phenomenon in Bollywood. Over the last few years, many directors have come in front of the camera, to be di- rected by another filmmaker. We take a look at some who have impressed the audience with their acting capabilities. KARAN JOHAR The producer-director first appeared on screen in Bollywood’s iconic love story Dil- wale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Because of his friendship with Aditya Chopra, Karan did a cameo as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s buddies in the film. Decades later, Anurag Kashyap surprised everyone when he announced that Karan would play the villain in his most an- ticipated project — Bombay Velvet. After watching the promos, we must say that though he is not playing a conventional villain, Karan is making an impact with his body language and acting. Now we are waiting to watch him on the screen. TIGMANSHU DHULIA We all know Tigmanshu as the man who has given us memorable films like Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Shagird, Charas among others. He surprised his fans when he made a special appearance in his own film Saheb... followed by a powerful role in Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. He played a politician effortlessly in the film. But not many know that Tigmanshu had made his acting debut in 1992 in Electric Moon direct- ed by Pradip Krishen. The film was reviewed at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the 36th London Film Festival (1992). At the 40th National Film Awards, the film won the award for Best Feature Film in English. Un- fortunately, not many from Tigmanshu’s frater- nity have been able to do justice to his talent. FARHAN AKHTAR Multi-talented Farhan made his foray into Bollywood as a director with Dil Chahta Hai. Three films later, (Lakshya and Don), Farhan made his acting debut with Abhishek Kapoor’s Rock On!! And that was the beginning of a good innings. Luck By Chance, Karthik Calling Karthik, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag — Farhan’s repertoire as an actor is getting richer by the year. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag even won him lots of awards and accolades because he had not only worked on his body and look for the film but had completely trans- formed himself into the role of athlete Milkha Singh. His upcoming film Dil Dhadakne Do is also set to release next month. It’s tough to say whether Farhan is a better actor or director because he does both brilliantly. FARAH KHAN Farah is the only female director who has turned actor. She entered the industry as a choreographer and made actors dance to her steps. In her long association with Bollywood, Farah has appeared in several films. She was a dancer with Javed Jaffrey in Saat Saal Baad, made a spe- cial appearances in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho and many others. But she made her acting debut as the female lead opposite Boman Irani in a cute romantic film - Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, directed by Bela Seh- gal. Farah lost oodles of weight for the role. Though not a box-office success, the film was critically acclaimed. We are now waiting to see more of the fiery actress. AMOLE GUPTE Amole Gupte came into limelight during the making of Taare Zameen Par. He is known for making films revolving around children — Stan- ley Ka Dabba and Hawa Hawai. But there is no doubt that Amol is an equally good actor. He first appeared in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar in a forgettable role. Years later, he impressed the audience and critics with Kaminey, Phas Gaye Re Obama, Stanley..., Bheja Fry 2 and Singham Re- turns. We hope some director offers him a role that suits his powerful persona. KUNAL KOHLI The director who has given us hits like Hum Tum and Fanaa, is making his acting debut by playing a solo hero in Phir Se, directed by Kunal and Ajay Bhuyan. The films also stars TV actress Jennifer Winget. Phir Se revolves around two individuals who find love after their respective marriages fall apart. Sources close to the director say that he left no stone un- turned to look his best on screen. Considering that he is playing the solo lead, the filmmak- er-turned-actor hit the gym to attain a lean look. He apparently lost 18 kilos and followed a strict workout pattern and a healthy diet for the look. ect — Bombay watching the ust say that ot playing a illain, Karan mpact with age and we are ch him HLI — COMPILED BY DEBARATI PALIT SINGH DEEPA GAHLOT A fter acting in films like Walk The Line and Wild, why would Reese With- erspoon even want to do a film like Hot Pursuit — which is assembly line female buddy movie, copying the worst traits of male cop-criminal buddy comedy. And there are too many of those already. Witherspoon plays a cop (and daughter of a cop) called Cooper, a stickler for rules, who has been relegated to a desk job because in her over-enthusiasm, she acci- dentally set a guy on fire (is this funny in the time of police bru- tality cases in the US?). She has to protect a just dead drug dealer’s bombshell wife, Daniella (Sofia Vergara — charming Columbian accent), from bad guys and cor- rupt cops, as they embark on an adventure across Texas. Cooper has to make sure at least Daniella reaches Dallas to testify against a drug lord (Joaquin Cosio), even if her husband could not. Somewhere down the line, as they bicker away, they manage to change costumes and are put through a series of tired gags, that do nothing to challenge their combined talent and sex appeal. Imagine Vergara being laughed at for her age, and short Wither- spoon for her height (and mous- tache!) And just because the two pro- tagonists are female, there has to be a silly gag about “lady busi- ness of the tampon nature” and a few faux titillating scenes, which are anything but sexy. Why two successful actresses would even want to appear in a film so dumb is beyond comprehension. Maybe because Hollywood does not come up much for over 30 (in the case of Vergara, over 40) actresses, un- less they produce films for them- selves. (Witherspoon was a pro- ducer for Gone Girl.) The pace is snappy and the running time mercifully short. Were it not for the combined star power of the leading ladies, their chemistry and comic timing, the film would have been dead on ar- rival. These two deserve a better film. DEEPA GAHLOT B haskar Bannerjee is a 70-year-old hy- pochondriac obsessed with his bowel movements. As if this was not annoy- ance enough for his daughter, he glee- fully announces to a potential suitor that she is not a virgin, hoping to nip the match in the bud, because he does not want her to get married. He treats his domestic help like a slave, who has to suffer the indig- nity of making ‘ssss’ sounds standing out- side the restroom door while Bhaskar pees. Shoojit Sircar’s Piku (written by Juhi Chaturvedi) does examine the urban issue of geriatric care without the high-pitched Bollywood melodrama associated with it, but by making Bhaskar (Amitabh Bachchan -- excellent), so annoyingly manipulative of his long-suffering daughter Piku (Deepika Padukone -- radiant), he renders it too un- believable. Also, one assumes that his problem has not sprung up overnight, so why does ev- ery morning in the household begin with a shrieking match; why does Piku interrupt an important client meeting or date to dis- cuss the colour or consistency of her fa- ther’s crap? After living in the same house as the crackpot, she should know just how to deal with his infantile behavior. He is rude to everyone from the maid, to the neighbour to his sister-in-law (Moushumi Chatterjee). Piku comes across as a helpless martyr. She is not otherwise a shrinking violet, she has a “need” based relationship with her business partner (Jisshu Sengupta) and is horrid enough to scare off all the driv- ers of Rana’s (Irrfan Khan -- perfectly wry) taxi service. So her constant submission to her father’s unreasonable whims is uncon- vincing. The film’s hysterical tone settles down somewhat when Rana takes on the onerous job of driving them to Kolkata -- because no other driver will take up the job. Rana, who has a shrewish mother and sister him- self, knows just how to deal with Bhaskar, though the old man’s stubbornness defeats him too, on a couple of occasions. They arrive at the Kolkata mansion which Piku hopes to sell and a tentative friendship develops between Piku and Rana, but it all remains ambiguous. The film is different in the way it sets up relationships and stays unpredictable; it has many warm and funny moments and absolutely wonderful performances from all the actors, even the one-scene appearances. But in the end, it is as engaging or amusing as a dinner table conversation about shit.
