THEORIES OF LEARNING

KURT LEWIN’S FIELD THEORY
Learning is a process
of perceptual
organization or
reorganisation of one’s
life space involving
insight and
emphasizes on
behaviour and
motivation in learning.
 Field or life space is a psychological representation of the
individual's environment.
Life space consist of everything that affects the behaviour of the
individual at a particular time.
It included the physical environment which consists of perceived
objects and events.
LIFE SPACE
FIELD OR LIFE SPACE
The person is often represented as a moving point about in
his life space. Psychologically a person is composed of two
components- motor perceptual stratum and inner
perceptual stratum. The former represents his abilities and
latter his needs. In addition to the person, it contains the
goals, the barrier that restricts the persons movement
towards the goal, and the path he must follow to reach his
goal. A person in the life space is always under the influence
of certain psychological forces called vectors. It is the vector
force that controls the movement of the person towards a
goal.

FIELD THEORY AND LEARNING
Field theory considers learning as a change in the
cognitive structure of the life-space resulting from the
locomotion of the person from one region to another.
The movement of the person is decided by the
valance of the goal. When a person is attracted by a
force, it is said to have positive valance. When a
person is repelled by a goal, it is said to have a
negative valance. When a person tends to move
towards a region in life space
CONFLICTS
1. Approach-approach conflict
2. Approach-avoidance conflict
3.Avoidance-avoidance conflict
It arises when the person is caught in between two goals
both having positive valances
It arises when the person is caught in between a
positive and negative goal
It arises when the person is caught in between two goals
both having negative valances
Field theory
Field theory considers learning as a change in the
cognitive structure of the life space resulting from the
locomotion of the person from one region to another.
The change in the cognitive structure are caused by
vector forces operating in the psychological field.
