Indicators of blood pressure monitoring

 1. 1. NATIONAL QUALITY INDICATORS PROJECT – RESULTS OF A PILOT TESTING IN HYPERTENSION Marjana Grm, MD, Tanja Leskovar, MD, Janko Kersnik, MD , PhD
 2. 2. A IM

To evaluate the quality of blood pressure management in family practice in Slovenia

 3. 3. METHODS

The study was performed from 11.4.2001 to 31.10.2001 as a pilot of the national Quality indicators project.

Participants: 8 GPs from Gorenjska region.

Data obtained: GPs themselves, using printed forms.

Sample: 735 hypertonic patients.

 4. 4. RESULTS 1/5

Age: 29 – 77 years. Average age: 63,6 years.

63% women and 37% men.

The average blood pressure level in the last three consecutive measurements was 148/85 mm Hg, the lower quartile 137/80, the upper quartile 155/90.

 5. 5. RESULTS - last three measurements of systolic BP 2/5
 6. 6. RESULTS - last three measurements of dia stolic BP 3/5
 7. 7. RESULTS 4/5

70,3 % had well regulated systolic and diastolic blood pressure ( < 160/90 mmHg).

78,1 % of all have diastolic BP < 90 mm Hg

42,5 % (younger than 65 years) < 140/90.

Well-regulated blood pressure had 73,4% of women and 65,1% of men.

91,4% of hypertensive patients took their medication regularly (93,3% of women and 88,2% of men).

 8. 8. RESULTS 5/5

The average number of drugs was 1,6 .

Follow up was regular in 90,5% of hypertensive patients (92,9% of women and 86,4% of men).

91,4% of hypertensive patients got advice for life style modification.

 9. 9. CONCLUSIONS

We showed, that quality assessment by the means of collecting quality indicators is feasible in family practice.

The results showed us relatively good levels of care and an important area for quality improvement.

Data should be used in peer groups and quality circles to improve our performance.
