  2. 2. Introduction  Important for successful transition into adult life.  Characteristics of self-determined behavior.  Relationship between culture and self-determination.  Self-determination as a motivator.  Teaching strategies to improve self- determination.
  3. 3. Characteristics of Self-Determination  Four specific criteria:  Actions are taken independently.  The behavior is self-monitored.  Events are begun and responded to in a way that is psychologically enabling.  Self-fulfillment is a key component of the outcome.
  4. 4. Why Self-Determination Is Important  Individuals who develop better self- determination skills during school achieve better post-school outcomes.  A discussion about motivation and what causes us to do what we do becomes necessary.
  5. 5. Motivation  Learning begins with motivation.  Three basic psychological needs which motivate all human activity:  Self-determination  Competence  Relatedness
  6. 6. Extrinsic Motivation  Reinforcement stimulates individuals to pursue activities that provide a reward.  The reward depends on the individual performing a particular behavior.
  7. 7. Intrinsic Motivators in the Classroom  Student-chosen options.  Student decision-making  Continuous information and functioning.  A Sense of autonomy.
  8. 8. Diversity as a Factor in Developing Self-Determination  Different cultural backgrounds = different ideas about self- determination.  In every ethnic group, students feel that their parents are supportive of their decisions, goals, and self- management.  The home environment is the best place to develop independence.
  9. 9. Diversity con’t.  Researchers and lawmakers alike emphasize the importance of addressing the needs of students from varying cultures.  The transition phase of education can vary from one ethnic group to another.  We must consider the views of the diverse communities that special education services.
  10. 10. Teaching Strategies to Improve Self-Determination  Finding new methods to motivate students and reinforce positive behavioral responses.  Making effective motivators instructional plans.  Problem-solving is important for student outcomes.  Student involvement in the IEP meeting.
  11. 11. Conclusion  Characteristics of self-determination.  Impact of student and parental cultural points of view.  Self-determination is a basic psychological need.  Specific instructional strategies work toward developing self-motivation.  Students must in their own way find motivation.
