How to write an email pitch for a journalist

  1. 1. Q:What is an email pitch?
  2. 2. A: An email you send to a journalist outlining an idea for a story
  3. 3. Use the subject header to ‘sell’ your story
  4. 4. But don’t use puns or try to be clever like this…
  5. 5. …otherwise journalists will have no idea what your story is about (and probably won’t open your email)
  6. 6. So if you’re launching the UK’s first disposable wetsuit…
  7. 7. …that’s exactly what your subject header should say
  8. 8. Skip the pleasantries and get straight to your story idea
  9. 9. Use an informal, conversational style
  10. 10. Don’t send big attachments (if you’re also sending a press release, paste into the body of the email)
  11. 11. Do say if you have great photos (and include a couple) as they can sell a story (no massive files though!)
  12. 12. Unless it’s integral to the story, leave your bio until the end…
  13. 13. Here’s the whole pitch for you…
  14. 14. I hope you found that helpful. If you’d like more PR tips, my book Your Press Release Is Breaking My Heart is available on my website and on Amazon
