A talented and passionate Electronic Engineering undergraduate, seeking a summer placement opportunity
in a progressive organisation, with a view to gaining further experience which will enable me to be an
effective engineer post-graduation. I have a demonstrable track record of exceptional achievement
throughout my university period of study - including a thirteen month placement with ARM Holdings plc -
and I am held in high regard by both staff and fellow students.
Education
 2012 – Present: MEng Electronic Engineering, Department of Electronics, University of
Surrey (5 year sandwich course)
 Average mark of 79%, a score equivalent to a first class degree, in my first year. The 9th top
score out of approximately 80 students.
 Average mark of 79% in my second year also.
 Placed on the university STARS scheme in my second year for high academic performance
in my first year.
 Developed transferrable skills in: presentations delivery, report writing, problem solving
and project management, among others.
 Have so far completed modules in:

 2005 – 2012: The Holy Trinity C of E Secondary School, Crawley
 A-levels: Electronics (A*), Maths (B) and Physics (B). Received the Electronics subject
award for the academic year 2011/12.

Employment and Work Experience
 Industrial Placement Student, ARM Holdings plc (August 2014 – September 2015)
 Worked as an RTL Implementation Engineer in the Systems and Software Group for
thirteen months as part of my degree. Part of a team of ten diverse engineers. Received

“I am impressed with how James can manage several tasks at the same time, with an air of

 Involved with several different projects, including developing two interrupt controllers and
a silicon tape-out. Worked with many different people and refined my interpersonal skills.
 This placement has prepared me for the world of work and given me insight into how
companies operate, how to conduct myself as a responsible employee, and how to manage
my time efficiently such that I can deliver on multiple tasks or projects concurrently.
 Received four two-day training courses on the following Cadence tools: Encounter RTL
Compiler (RC), Encounter Conformal, Encounter Digital Implementation (EDI), and
Tempus. Also worked with Synopsys tools like DC and ICC.
 Sales Advisor at WHSmith, Crawley (October 2009 – October 2011)
 Part-time job. My responsibilities were to serve customers (including those with complaints
or complex issues) and manage stock on the shop floor.
 Proved to be a loyal and dependable employee who delivered consistently high results in a
range of tasks. Gained valuable skills in customer service.
 Group Leader at Pied Piper Activities, Crawley (12th – 23rd August 2013)
 Two weeks leading groups of children in fun summer activities. Responsibilities included
ensuring child safety, leading a group of twelve 8-9 year olds in various activities,
maintaining the facilities used.
 Developed and exercised my leadership skills and was trusted with responsibility for the
wellbeing of many children.
 Hamworthy Combustion Engineering, Poole, Dorset (25th July – 5th August 2011)
 Completed two weeks of work experience in the Process Engineering R&D department.
Involved in a burner range development project.
Interests and Achievements
 University STARS scheme 2013/14 (Surrey’s Top Achievers Recognised and Supported)
 Enrolled on to the STARS scheme for achieving an average of higher than 70% in my first
year of study.
 Sport and Outdoors
 Enthusiastic runner. Completed a half-marathon, two Tough Mudders and five 10k races in
2014/15, raising over £750 for charity.
 I enjoy the outdoors immensely, organising camping/hiking trips with my friends every
summer.
Other Skills: Proficiency in Perl, TCL and C programing languages, valid UK driving license, aptitude in
word processing and Microsoft Excel.
