  2. 2. <ul><li>A system designed to treat software as an asset </li></ul><ul><li>It has two high level goals: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Allow for tracking of software licenses in which Sandia has an interest </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Enable reapplication of software licenses across the enterprise </li></ul></ul>What is SAMS?

Why SAMS? <ul><li>Budget, accountability, licensing compliance </li></ul><ul><li>Inventory is key to management of software assets </li></ul><ul><li>Management of software assets requires </li></ul><ul><ul><li>knowledge of annual maintenance or software assurance costs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>knowledge of the number of licenses you own and can apply </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>knowledge of how the software assets are in use in the enterprise </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>the ability to reapply these assets across the enterprise </li></ul></ul>

SAMS Current State <ul><li>Currently able to register a software license and associate people and/or machines with that license </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Some of the information recorded includes purchase cost, maintenance cost, expiration dates, number of seats, license ownership, secondary use rights </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Accomplished using existing infrastructure configuration items in Sandia’s NetWork Information System (NWIS) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>People </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Machines </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Organizations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Projects </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Vendors </li></ul></ul>

SAMS Permissions <ul><li>One of the first questions is who will manage software </li></ul><ul><li>Currently there are two permission levels </li></ul><ul><ul><li>CSU Personnel and System Administrators </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Can associate people/machines with software licenses </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>SAMS Administrators </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Can add/edit/delete software, software versions, software licenses </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Can associate people/machines with software licenses </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>The SAMS Administrators must create the software and license in SAMS before it can be associated with people and/or machines </li></ul>

SAMS in Use at Sandia <ul><li>SAMS is in use at Sandia for a variety of purposes </li></ul><ul><ul><li>to track the machines associated with MSDN licenses so that these machines are excluded from the annual count of machines subject to Microsoft licensing fees </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to track the people using a seat (or multiple seats) under a 500-seat Dreamweaver license </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to track the people using a seat under a SmartDraw 100-seat license, and recover the cost of the license from each person </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to track the software installed on Sandia owned machines at the Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) </li></ul></ul>
