2. The importance of games
The role of games has always been
essential in the learning.
3. Origins
In 17th and 18th century Europe,
criminals who were sentenced to
death by hanging could demand the
"Rite of Words and Life."
In the "Rite of Words and Life" a
criminal to be hanged was strung up
over a 5 legged stand, and a board
with a series of short ropes
representing a word was displayed.
Five wrong guesses, and the criminal
was hanged.
If the entire word was filled in
correctly or guessed, the condemned
would be set free from that sentence
and not tried again on that crime.
4. How to play
Hangman is a game in which you have to guess
the hidden word.
You are shown a set of blank letters that match a
word and you have to guess what these letters
are to reveal the hidden word.
You guess by picking letters from those displayed.
If you pick a letter that is in the word, that letter
is revealed from the blank letters; however, if you
pick a letter that is not in the word, then a
stickman is slowly drawn.
With each wrong letter guess, the man is drawn
more and more. When the man is finished, he is
hung and the game is lost.
This is why the game is called 'Hangman'. If you
can reveal all the letters in the word before the
man is hung then you are successful and the full
word is revealed.
5. Educational use
The hangman game can be very useful
to teach new vocabulary not only in
the mother tongue but also in foreign
languages because we know that
vocabulary plays an important role in
learning a language.
Moreover, you can use the hangman
game to teach or strengthen words
taken from different fields or different
school subjects.
Some researches show that hangman
game could improve the students’
mastery in understanding the meaning
of the words.
