LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT UNANSWERED QUESTIONS • Who are the 1400 individuals? • Have any of them added works? • How many are current staff? • How many are students? • Do they need help/encouragement to populate their ORCID records? • How can I help if I don’t know who they are? • Working with developers at the ORCID Day in March, we managed to get an export using the ORCID public API based on the Ringgold ID of an institution http://powerful-chamber-19570.herokuapp.com/ 5

LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT DATA, LOVELY DATA 6 Export gives 2004 ORCID records with a mention of University of Reading in the Education or Employment sections Caveats: • Information has to be set as PUBLIC by the user • May be more than one Ringgold ID in use at your institution • Very few users make their email address public (77 out of 2004) • Number of works reports even if the items themselves are private What does the export give you? • ORCID ID • Date record last updated • Name • Education • Employment • Other IDs linked to their ORCID • Email address • Work count

LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT PRELIMINARY FINDINGS 7 Are they staff or students? • 88/469 presumed current staff have not added any works to their records • Over half (251) have made an update to their records in 2019 • But, 30 haven’t touched them since 2016…. • Half (234) have added at least one other identifier to their record (Scopus, Loop, Researcher ID etc) • Current status is based on their last entry being UoR – may not be accurate Staff/Student? LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT WHAT NEXT? • Data from API export can be used as a baseline to measure future advocacy activity and track impact of future integration • I will change my recommendation for researchers when setting up ORCIDs, currently don’t ask them to add employment details • Export gives me a target list for: 1. Emailing individuals who have not added any works to their records with offers of help or links to handouts 2. Emailing individuals who have not updated their records recently with encouragement to add new information 3. Emailing individuals who have not linked a Scopus ID or any other kind of ID to their record with tips and tricks/handouts on how to do so 9
