Dance is a series of movements that match the speed and rhythm of a
piece of music.
= it is an expression of mankindโs deep moods and emotions.
CLASSIFICATION OF DANCE MOVEMENTS
A. Locomotor movements refer to movements that travel from one
place to another.
1. Walk- to move in series of steps in any direction
2. Hop- to spring on one foot and land on the same foot.
3. Jump- to spring on both feet and land on both feet.
4. Skip- to leap lightly on the same foot in one count.
5. Run- to walk with long strides.
6. Leap- to spring on one foot and land on the other foot.
7. Slide- to glide or move smoothly on a surface.
8. Gallop- the act of leaping fast and rapidly.

B. Axial movements- refers to movements forming an axis.
1. Twist โ to turn with a winding motion or rotate around.
2. Circle โ to move in circle; go around in a circle.
3. Flex โ to bend a joint or limb by the action of the flexor muscles.
4. Extend โ to stretch out a limb or other parts of the body.
5. Sway โ to swing back and forth; swing from side to side or from one side to
another.
6. Swing โ to move freely or regularly back and forth.
ELEMENTS OF MOVEMENTS
1. Space โ is the area in which we move in order to produce patterns and
designs.
a. Directions- forward, sideward, backward, diagonal or oblique, up and down.
b. Forms โ the direction where the body is facing.
c. Dimensions โ range of amplitude.
d. Formations โ floor patterns, such as criss-cross, curved, zigzag, circle, spiral,
straight or spread-out.
e. Level โ elevation example high or low in standing, lying or kneeling.

a. Tempo โ slow, fast, accelerating, and decelerating.
b. Duration โ the length of time a step or movement is used.
c. Rhythm โ a regulated pattern formed by long or short notes.
3. Force/Dynamics โ this refers to how the body is moving,
which may be described in terms of energy and weight.
a. Accent โ the emphasis on the use of step, light or heavy.
b. Balance โ flow of movement.

FUNDAMENTAL DANCE POSITION
1. ARMS POSITION
First Position
1. Bend both arms at hips level.
2. Elbow rounded, fingers pointing downward
Second Position
1. Open both arms upward, elbow rounded.
2. Fingers pointing upward.
Third Position
1. Raise the left arm upward.
2. Right arm in first position.
Fourth Position
1. Place the right arm sideward, elbow rounded and the left arm upward.
2. Elbow slightly bent.
Fifth Position
1. Raise both arms upward, elbow rounded.
2. Elbow rounded.

2. FEET POSITION
First Position
1.Place heels together.
2. Toes of both feet turned out.
Second Position
1.Move the right foot sideward.
2. In line with heel of the left foot.
Third Position
1.Move the heel of the right foot to the instep of the left foot.
Fourth Position
1.Put the right foot obliquely forward.
2. Right toes pointing outward.
Fifth Position
1. Move the heel of your right to the toes of your left.
