The Elephant In The Mosque: The Wahhabi MenaceIt was said:Many people who self-identify asMuslims ask why should traditional SunniMuslims exert their time and energy towarning against those who arecalled “Wahhabis” (although nowadays theWahhabis dont usually refer to themselvesas “Wahhabis" but “Salafis). The answer ismanifold. Although there are many groupsand ideologies that pose threats to theMuslims, such as, the cult of corporateconsumerism, Christian missionaries, themilitary-industrial complex, the atheists,materialists and hedonists, adnauseum,these ideologies as grave of a concern asthey may be in various parts of the world,none of these groups consider themselvesMuslims. Ignorant and vulnerable Muslims donot think that the beliefs these peoplementioned advocate are actually from thereligion of the Prophet Muhammad.Wahhabism, on the other hand, masqueradesitself in the garb of piety and claims to bethe true protector of the Sunnah of theProphet. This can even be seen in thename “Salafi” that the Wahhabis haveadopted for themselves. Because of thelong history of Wahhabi villainy, and theirbeing exposed by Sunni scholars andhistorians, the Wahhabis callthemselves “Salafis” to gain—in the minds of
  2. 2. the unsuspecting—legitimacy by claiming toaffiliate themselves with the earliest andmost righteous generations of Muslims inthe Muhammadiyyah nation, that is, thegenuine Salaf, who lived in the first 300years of the Hijrah.If one wishes to expose Wahhabism anddemonstrate that Wahhabism is NOT simplya “sect” of Islam, but that the Wahhabism iscontrary to Islam, then all one needs to dois examine the ludicrous (dis)beliefs theWahhabis have regarding the Creator of theUniverse. First, every Muslim must know andbelieve that the Prophet Muhammad onlytaught one belief in God. There is only onetrue belief in God, and the person who holdsa bad belief about Allah would not be aMuslim in reality, for hed be worshipingsomething other than God, and that wouldbe shirk (polytheism). The correct belief inGod—the belief universally shared by allMuslims is that Allah is One: Allah has noassociates; no one or thing creates exceptAllah. Allah is Unique; Allah is Incomparableand has no similarity—at all—to theoriginated beings. Allah is Indivisible, that is,Allah is not something that couldpotentially be subject to division orcomposition. Allah is not a body, object, orspatial entity. Allah has no size and does notrequire dimensions to exist. Allah existswithout place, distance, or direction.Muslims universally believe that Allah isEternal. Allah is not subject to time. Allahhas no start, or origin, or age. Allah doesnot undergo change, for change entailsdevelopment, and development indicateseither perfection or imperfection. Allah,
  3. 3. the Holy and Almighty does not “improve”or degenerate in status. Given that Allah isEternal and everything else is a creation, it isknown that Allah is not dependent upon thecreations. Allah was before the creationswere. Allah was before the existence ofspace and place. Allah does not change ortransform. After creating space and place,Allah did not transform and materialize in alocation. In summary, the Muslims universallybelieve in One Perfect Eternal Creator, Whois the Creator of everything and absolutelydoes not need or resemble anything.Whoever does not believe as such, doesnot hold the belief in God that the ProphetMuhammad taught, and consequently wouldnot be a Muslim.The Wahhabis, in a nutshell, pray to a giantunidentified extraterrestrial object withfingers, two feet, one shin, a pair of outstretched right hands and a smiling face. Thisis not the belief of the Muslims. Now somemay think that what was described is acaricature of the Wahhabi doctrine, but it isnot. The Wahhabis believe that Allah islarge—and not small. The Wahhabis believethat Allah is not on the earth, but dwells ina location above our heads; hence, theybelieve that Allah is extraterrestrial (and anobject). The Wahhabis believe that peoplewill not be able to identify Allah on theJudgment Day, until Allah allegedly showsoff His supposed shin. The Wahhabis believethat Allah has fingers, and will place someof the creations of His alleged fingers comethe Judgment Day. The Wahhabis believe thatAllah has two feet which are allegedly onthe `Arsh now, and one of which will be putinto Hell on the Judgment Day. The Wahhabis
  4. 4. claim that Allah has a pair of right hands,and that His alleged hands areoutstretched. And, indeed, the Wahhabisclaim Allah “smiles” and has a “face.” Ofcourse, many Wahhabis will not openlyprofess such an outlandish and repulsivebelief in the way described above, for itwould cause many of even its morefanatical members to call into questionsuch an absurd and contradictory doctrine.Also, the Wahhabis, in order to take the edgeoff of their anthropomorphism, will claimthings like, “Allah has a literal face, but itsnot like ours.” A “face” is the front part of thehead. A literal head is a body part. Whosoeverbelieves Allah is a body is not a Believer inIslam. Also, even if the Wahhabi does notbelieve that Allah has a real-actual-literal “front part of the head,” the Wahhabisdo indeed believe that Allah is some sort ofobject that exists in a direction and requiresspace in order to exist. This alone istantamount to kufr (disbelief), for it entailsascribing to Allah originated attributes andthe dependency upon space. Allah isSublimely clear from all that which theobject worshipers ascribe to Him!The above is enough to make it clear toevery reasonable Muslim that the belief ofthe Wahhabis contradicts the belief of Islamand the Prophet Muhammad. Nonetheless,because many Muslims are not well learnedin the matters of Tawheed (the sciencepertaining to the Oneness and Perfection ofGod), they may fall victim to the religiousrhetoric of the Wahhabis. The Wahhabis dothis by emphasizing Sunnah matters of dressand practice, and even claim that they areagainst all forms of shirk (polytheism)---
  5. 5. but they fail to realize that their worship ofa giant imaginary object also entails shirk,for it certainly doesnt entail worship of theCreator.In addition to the erroneous convictionsthe Wahhabis have regarding God, theWahhabis do not consider the masses ofMuslims to be Muslims. Given the absurdliteralist misunderstanding of QuranicVerses and Hadiths pertaining to matters ofdoctrine, it should not be surprising that theWahhabis also have an absurd and literalistmethodology pertaining to the matters ofIslamic jurisprudence. Because the Wahhabisimagined meanings to Quranic Verses thatwere not there, the Wahhabis consider theMuslims at large to be polytheists. Thiscan be seen from their origins in the regioncalled “Najd” (this was a region the Prophet,incidentally, warned us about and said itwould be an area where the “horn of thedevi"l would arise). The Wahhabis followMuhammad ibn `Abdul-Wahhab. Muhammadibn Abdul-Wahhab deemed it to be a virtuousdeed to kill Muslims and confiscate theirproperty (because in his mind the Muslimswerent Muslims in reality). Later, in the early1800s the Wahhabis occupied much of Al-Hijaz (Western Arabia), including, Taif, Madinah,and Mecca, where the Wahhabis pillaged,terrorized and massacred the inhabitantsof that blessed land. This is the historicalreality of Wahhabism. This is the history thatthe Wahhabis are ominously silent about.Given that the Wahhabi sect started offas a terrorist movement, it should not besurprising that those who self-identify asSunni Muslims and commit acts of terrorism
  6. 6. are almost always Wahhabis or heavilyinfluenced by their ideology. The Muslimsin North Africa and the Middle East and intoCentral Asia have suffered tremendouslybecause of the blood spilled in the name ofthis Wahhabi ideology. And for the Muslims inthe West, the negative perception of Muslimsand the increasing levels of persecution arelargely due to the influence of Wahhabism.That is not to say that Wahhabism is the onlyproblem the Muslims face in the West, butwhen it comes to those involved in terroristplots, or even those entrapped in such plotsby the security agencies, Wahhabism is asignificant factor in inspiring those whomay have the ambition to commit atrocities.If Muslims in the West wish to reduce thelevel of bigotry we face, then it would serveus well to expose those who promote theWahhabi ideology in the name of Islam.The way to combat the radicalization causedby Wahhabism is to equip the general Muslimpopulation with some of the standardIslamic proofs for the Existence, Oneness,Transcendence, and Perfection of Allah.These are the proofs from the Quran andHadith (sayings of the Prophet) that theSunni scholars elaborated upon in greatdetail to refute those who mistook theattributes of the creations for the Attributesof the Creator and consequently ascribedto God bodily properties. These proofs alsoinclude the sound rational proofs, such as:Allah is not dependent upon the creations.Space and direction are creations.Ergo, Allah is not dependent upon space ordirection.

By exposing the ludicrous object-worshipingWahhabi doctrine and demonstrating that itis not the Islamic belief in One absolutelyIncomparable Creator, Muslims would bebetter able to identify and isolate theWahhabis in their mosques and communities.Another benefit in exposing the Wahhabisfrom a doctrinal point of view is that notonly would one be educating Muslims andfortifying the Muslims with the Quranic,Prophetic, and rational proofs for theIslamic belief in God, one would also beeducating non-Muslims about Islam. Insteadof starting the conversation from a positionof apologizing for Islam---or for extremists---Muslims could now engage non-Muslimsby explaining to them the profundity ofthe Muslim belief in the Creator. Many non-Muslims simply dont know much more aboutIslam other than what they have heard inthe mass media. Never therein is the actualMuslim belief in God discussed in any detail.This is the job of Muslims. If the genuineIslamic belief is made known to more ofthe public, there is a very good chance aconsiderable number of truth seeking non-Muslims would embrace Islam. Hence, it ismandatory for more Muslims to acquire theknowledge of Islamic theology and educatenon-Muslims about the true belief in theCreator of the Universe.It must be asked: why dont more Islamicorganizations simply identify the menace ofextremism---i.e., Wahhabism---by name? Surelyit is not a difficult matter to investigatethe theology of Wahhabism, or Wahhabismshistorical origins and its connection tofanaticism and terrorism. Sadly, many Muslim
  8. 8. centers and their leadership are beholdento varying degrees to the funding from theSaudi-Wahhabi regime. Other Islamic centerssimply are not well-versed in detailedmatters of traditional Islamic doctrineand are not familiar with the doctrines ofWahhabism. Other Islamic centers respondto the matter of Wahhabism with thesimple-minded misunderstanding that ifcontroversial theological matters areignored and not discussed, then “Muslimunity” will be realized---while failing torecognize that Islamic solidarity is predicatedon having the proper belief in God. TheWahhabis do not have the proper belief inGod---Wahhabis believe in some form ofobject worship. Muslims do not worship anobject.For Muslims to strive against radicalizationand extremism, we have to be sincere. Firstof all, we have to be sincere to Allah. Beingsincere to Allah, means seeing to it that onelearns his (or her) Religion well; that one hasthe correct belief in God---that one doesnot violate Gods Perfection and Onenessby ascribing to God the characteristics ofcreated beings. Being sincere also meansthat one does not betray the Muslims byfailing to warn them about those beliefsthat nullify ones Islam, such as, the object-worshiping creed of the Wahhabis. Andfinally, sincerity also means not betrayingthe larger society by pretending that thereisnt a Wahhabi menace masquerading inMuslim garb in our mosques.- this note was originally posted by anotherbrother.
