Background► Healthcare Innovation is recognised as a national enterprise opportunity in ► Action Plan for Jobs 2012 ►Action 7.2.1, the Government committed to “deliver a Health Innovation Hub to drive collaboration between the health system and commercial enterprises leading to the development and commercialisation of new healthcare technologies, products, services and start‐ups emerging from within the health system and/or firms.” ► Innovation Taskforce Report ► Enterprise Agency Planning Strategies ► Industrial calls and proposals for connected health, silver health and increased commercialisation of health derived innovation

Background► Innovation directly supports the national Life Sciences industry ► In 2010 this industry had ►>€56.8 Billion exports ►63.55% of total exports ► >52,000 jobs in 350 enterprises► There is an urgent need to join up fragmented national efforts and address obstacles in health related commercialisation
  5. 5. Progress to date► National Implementation Chair (Dave Shanahan) appointed (March 2012)► National Project Team selected ► Government Departments of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Health ► State Enterprise Agencies (EI, IDA, SFI) ► Industry ► Clinical Leadership from HSE

Progress to date► National Implementation Team set up April 2012► Location for Demonstrator Hub selected May 2012► Local steering group – Chair appointed (John Higgins) ► Western Gateway Building, UCC► Enterprise Ireland issued a call for applicant companies► Interim Director appointed (Colman Casey)

  9. 9. Projects► Presentations by companies of project concepts to Steering Group (25th July 2012)► Steering group reviewed, critiqued and refined all proposals (by 31st August 2012)► Steering group provided feedback to all companies (03rd September 2012)
  10. 10. Projects► The Steering Group provided the following to all companies ►A template to define the scope of each project ► Contact points for each company in the healthcare system ► A modus operandi of engagement with their healthcare partners ► A request for defined project deliverables

Projects► Meetings were set up between each company, their healthcare partner(s) and Hub Director to agree and finalise each project plan (October 2012)► All project plans were agreed► Six project leaders were appointed► Initiated discussions with MPHC on joint innovation projects December 14th 2012

Arann Healthcare (Daithí Fallon, CIT, Project Lead) • Evaluation of an innovative, safe and effective way to decontaminate healthcare equipment • Partnering with CRF in Mercy University Hospital• Helix Health (Kieran Moynihan CIT, Project Lead) • Irish Electronic Prescription Service (IEPS) • Partnering with Mitchelstown Primary Care, Blackpool GPs/Pharmacies and School of Pharmacy UCC

(Kieran Flynn, DCU, Project Lead) • Towards a regulatory approved diagnostic device for point-of-care thyroid (TSH) testing • Partnering with CRF in Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and Bon Secours Hospital5. Rigney Dolphin (Éamon Curtin, UCC, Project Lead) • Post Discharge Call Programme • Partnering with CUH Epilepsy Clinic• Sláinte Healthcare (Stephen Byrne, UCC, Project Lead) • Automation of Workflow and Care Pathways (Paperless) • Partnering with CUH Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and Wound Clinic

Current Status► The Health Innovation Hub team is aggressively progressing each of the six projects► Detailedproject plans are in place for each of the projects and milestones are being measured and assessed► Each of the project leader’s reports back to the local steering committee and the interim director attends all project meetings► We have also engaged a Health Economist who is currently contributing to one of the projects and has been asked to commit to two more► Working in association with Carl Beame, CompleteGP Ltd. and MPHC to integrate their work (electronic prescriptions, integration of near patient testing devices, paperless warfarin) with Health Hub Innovation Projects

Next Steps► Progress and track all projects► Hub partners to transfer agreed funding contributions► Purchase the necessary hardware/software for the Hub► Construct Hub Offices► Set up remote satellites - including Mitchelstown and Mallow Primary Care Centres► Commence Demonstrator Hub appointment process
