  11. 11. Once upon a time in 2003…Mainly by chance we had the opportunityto have a demo of Integranova MES.We expend quite a lot of time tounderstand it well. The results were impressive.03/2011 Company Confidential 11Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  12. 12. First Pilot (I)We decided to make a pilot project. The project was the creation of the Company’sclub web. Mainly the management of a libraryplus some activities organized by the club.We defined several conditions for the project: • Lilly employees will be in charge of the development, but with the help of Integranova consultants. • Integranova would be the responsible for the project and of the final “product”03/2011 Company Confidential 12Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  13. 13. First Pilot (II)4 Lilly people had a one week trainingA Integranova consultant was in Lilly’soffices for two weeks. A programmer wasthere one week and also made some otherchanges from Integranova offices.03/2011 Company Confidential 13Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  14. 14. First Pilot - ResultsThe results were very good:• We had a prototype in 48 hours• The application was ready in less than a month• Perhaps the biggest problem is to get used with the architecture of the generated code• Good training is also very importantThe Proof of Concept can be considered a success03/2011 Company Confidential 14Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  15. 15. So … We decided to continue with the second project That was a little bit more complex and critical03/2011 Company Confidential 15Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  16. 16. 2nd ProjectThe project was a solution to manage theRetention and Stability Samples from themanufacturing site. It’s a regulated process that is related withthe quality of the product so it’s GMP.GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices and isone of the most strict regulations of the world (onlycomparable with the regulations of nuclear energy oraerospace industry) provided by the FDA (Food andDrug Administration)03/2011 Company Confidential 16Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  17. 17. 2nd Project - Special Requisites Electronic RecordThis means that any status of all thedata of the system can be recreated forany moment in time. This requirement implies a strongcontrol over any action that can takeplace in the application03/2011 Company Confidential 17Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  18. 18. 2nd Project - ResultsThe project was delivered in just onemonth time…03/2011 Company Confidential 18Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company

  20. 20. Errors found during testing phaseMake a guess:In all the cases they were errors in the model, due tobad understanding of the requisites03/2011 Company Confidential 20Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  21. 21. Trouble Tickets during 18 monthsMake a guess:12 in the first two months and another 8 along 16months?03/2011 Company Confidential 21Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  22. 22. Trouble Tickets during the subsequent18 monthsMake a guess:The first one after one year. Both times the problemwas a configuration parameter of the app. server03/2011 Company Confidential 22Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  23. 23. Conclusions – Based on our experienceThe productivity of the design/construct/deploy/testphases can be easily multiplied by four (even morefor applications that suite well)The relation 70-30 for support cost vs. the rest ofthe life cycle is no longer true. The benefits don’tcome only from the increased productivity, but fromthe increased quality and less support.Integranova support team is very good, both inknowledge and speed. 03/2011 Company Confidential 23 Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  24. 24. Conclusions – Based on our experienceThe bigger benefits come after two or threeprojects.80 to 90 percent of the manual changes arerelated with the user interface.Any needed change, change request forsupport, for example, is a change in the modeland you have 100% security that the generatedcode is going to work.03/2011 Company Confidential 24Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  25. 25. Conclusions Integranova MES is not valid for all projects, so it´s important to understandthat it is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution for the large variety of development projects. 03/2011 Company Confidential 25 Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
  26. 26. ConclusionsMy personal opinion is that this kind of tools are goingto allow the next step in the evolution of thedevelopment.First, assembler allowed us to avoid Machine Code. Then, third generation languages avoided having todeal with assembler. Now, with Integranova MES, we can avoid thirdgeneration languages and move to models. It seemsas the next logical step towards real engineering andleaving behind the “artisan era”. 03/2011 Company Confidential 26 Joaquín Rincón Copyright © 2000 Eli Lilly and Company
