  1. 1. It's IV chat time...welcome to all! #IVchat IVchat Good evening all! Let's begin w/ intros, pls. tell us about urself... #IVchat IVchat Hi all, I'm Cora, infusion nurse and moderator of IV chat. Welcome everyone! #IVchat InfusionNurse Hi, I'm Michelle, glad to be here! #IVchat VascularAccess Hi Michelle, glad you can join us tonight! #IVchat IVchat There are some other chats on tonight but most are finishing up so hope others can join us. #IVchat InfusionNurse @InfusionNurse ..i think so but we'll go ahead and get started.. #IVchat IVchat Hi Jon here, not a nurse but in healthcare, just lurking and listening.. #IVchat MEDsyntrix T1 - is a question from a colleague..states, surveyor told her not to reuse alcohol swabs - why? #IVchat IVchat @MEDsyntrix Hi jon! thanks for joining. #IVchat InfusionNurse T1 - u mean why not reuse alcohol swabs? #IVchat InfusionNurse Yes, RT @InfusionNurse: T1 - u mean why not reuse alcohol swabs? #IVchat IVchat T1 - honestly nurses r bad about that, we reuse it till its dry! LOL #IVchat VascularAccess T1 - not for reuse, even the package say sterile discard after use! #IVchat InfusionNurse so true but shld not reuse RT @VascularAccess: T1 - honestly nurses r bad about that, we reuse it till its dry! LOL #IVchat IVchat T1 - I agree w/ her surveyor, don't reuse after swabing a surface like a vial top or cap! Always use a new one #IVchat InfusionNurse
  2. 2. T1 - another point is not only using a new swab with each access, need to scrub the area well too like a endcap. #IVchat InfusionNurse @InfusionNurse ..r u talking about injection caps or hub #IVchat VascularAccess RT @IVchat: Its IV chat time...welcome to all! #ivchat FreshRN Yes, most refer to "scrub the hub" - making sure to clean cap b4 acces RT @VascularAccess: r u talking about injection caps or hub #IVchat InfusionNurse @FreshRN ..welcome to IV chat, glad u can join! #IVchat IVchat @InfusionNurse ..scrub the hub a new alcohol swab each time is what you are saying!! #IVchat VascularAccess yup, new alcohol swab & dont reuse swab RT @VascularAccess: scrub the hub a new alcohol swab each time is what you are saying!! #IVchat InfusionNurse @InfusionNurse ..i agree..also important is how scrubbing is done..#IVchat VascularAccess agree, scrub the hub like juicing a lemon RT @VascularAccess: i agree..also important is how scrubbing is done..#IVchat #IVchat InfusionNurse I think many nurses are forgetting to wipe the cap or injection ports b4 access - so it is a entry for infection.. #IVchat InfusionNurse Has anyone seen those new caps w/ built in alcohol pads? #IVchat VascularAccess ah good lead to next topic..RT @VascularAccess: Has anyone seen those new caps w/ built in alcohol pads? #IVchat IVchat
  3. 3. T2 - new products out there that help protect caps/hubs to prevent infections see eg http://excelsiormedical.com/swabcap.php #IVchat IVchat T2 - disclosure here - not endorsing this product, just up for discussion.. #IVchat InfusionNurse @infusionnurse - agree, some other r called port protectors, swab pockets, etc.. #IVchat IVchat @IVchat ..yeah, the idea is to keep the cap protecting when not in use and no need to disinfect prior to access #IVchat VascularAccess T2 - yes, not a bad idea tho #IVchat InfusionNurse T2 - anyone used these? #IVchat IVchat T2 - i have tried the curos port protector..http://www.iveramed.com/curos-port- protector #IVchat InfusionNurse T2 - good idea so it is protected from any contamination or other body fluids.. #IVchat InfusionNurse T2 - another way to prevent CR-BSI which continues to be an issue... #IVchat IVchat Companies who make these products have studies to show how effective it is in prevention CR-BSI.. #IVchat InfusionNurse T2 hope its not expensive...or hospitals will not buy!! #IVchat VascularAccess RT @IVchat: New products out there that help protect caps/hubs to prevent infections see eg http://excelsiormedical.com/swabcap.php #ivchat FreshRN hope not..RT @VascularAccess: T2 hope its not expensive...or hospitals will not buy!! #IVchat InfusionNurse T3 coming up.. #IVchat IVchat
  4. 4. T3 - always wanted to ask nrsg students if they learn about IV or infusion therapy in school - pls. feel free to share #IVchat IVchat I hope our nursing students are lurking..but IMO, it d be included in nursing curriculum so when they graduate they know what CL is #IVchat InfusionNurse Honestly did not learn how to start an IV till after I graduated and of course, I learn by trial and error!! #IVchat VascularAccess @IVchat What kinds of topics re: Infusion therapy are you referring to? (examples) #ivchat FreshRN T3 Many nrsg students do not even know how to start an IV or access a port #IVchat InfusionNurse Did not learn how to start an IV till I was an RN already #IVchat VascularAccess T3 - some don't even know the types of central lines.. #IVchat InfusionNurse Wow, really? RT @InfusionNurse T3 Many nrsg students do not even know how to start an IV or access a port #ivchat FreshRN T3 some have no idea about infusion pumps or basic skill like central line dressing changes #IVchat InfusionNurse Hi there! Came in late from work #IVchat NurseEducator ok, my tweets aren't showing up #IVchat VascularAccess Welcome, thanks for joining! RT @nurseeducator: Hi there! Came in late from work #IVchat IVchat In my experience, IV insertion and management is a major portion of our med-surg curriculum. (con't) #ivchat FreshRN @InfusionNurse ..testing my tweets r not showing #ivchat VascularAccess
  5. 5. (con't) Practicing IV insertion on one another was considered (by students) a rite of passage at my school *grins* #ivchat FreshRN @FreshRN ..good for you, most don't #IVchat InfusionNurse T3 I work with many new grads and the experience level varies greatly #IVchat NurseEducator RT @VascularAccess: Did not learn how to start an IV till I was an RN already #IVchat InfusionNurse RT @VascularAccess: Honestly did not learn how to start an IV till after I graduated and of course, I learn by trial and error!! #IVchat InfusionNurse @nurseeducator ..u think it has to do with what they were taught? #IVchat InfusionNurse @nurseeducator We have an "IV" day at the outpatient/GI/etc center where all the pts need IVs. The RNs there let us practice on them #ivchat FreshRN T3 Most of the new grads are inexperienced starting IVs or CVC management. Some are not well versed with the basics of aseptic tech. #IVchat NurseEducator I think the bulk of the experience happens though once we start working =) Where all sorts of opportunities present themselves =) #ivchat FreshRN @FreshRN ..that's great - what about central line care? #IVchat InfusionNurse @InfusionNurse Yes. #IVchat NurseEducator why is that? RT @nurseeducator: T3 Most of the new grads... Some are not well versed with the basics of aseptic tech. #IVchat InfusionNurse The new grads that are skilled are those that were nurse externs #IVchat NurseEducator @nurseeducator..shld new grad know about basic aseptic tech? #IVchat InfusionNurse
  6. 6. @FreshRN ..but have learned it in school will make them better prepared.. #IVchat InfusionNurse @InfusionNurse I recall caring for pts with PICCs, IJs, and CVCs @ other sites. My friend was lucky enough 2 try a huber needle #ivchat FreshRN RT @nurseeducator: The new grads that are skilled are those that were nurse externs #IVchat InfusionNurse We cover the many different types of CVCs in lecture (briefly) but I didn't get to work with all of them. Good 2 know about them tho #ivchat FreshRN I agree that it shld be included in basic nrsg curriculum and get practice during clinicals #IVchat VascularAccess @InfusionNurse I would think a new grad should know the basics. Knowledge is the foundation for prevention of infection! #IVchat NurseEducator Amen! RT @nurseeducator: I would think a new grad should know the basics. Knowledge is the foundation for prevention of infection! #IVchat InfusionNurse Agree! Gave me many additional opportunities RT @nurseeducator: The new grads that are skilled are those that were nurse externs #ivchat FreshRN @FreshRN What state were you trained in? #IVchat NurseEducator @FreshRN @nurseeducator..they need basic knowledge..work w/ the lines will give them the experience when they are already RNs #IVchat InfusionNurse RT @VascularAccess I agree that it shld be included in basic nrsg curriculum and get practice during clinicals #IVchat NurseEducator @nurseeducator I attended school at a university in southern California; just graduated in June--I kind of miss it =) #ivchat FreshRN
  7. 7. @VascularAccess ..they dont need to be experts yet but just basic knowledge... #IVchat InfusionNurse @nurseeducator Yeah, I believe our "IV day" @ pre-op/GI lab presented awesome opportunities. A pretty emotional day, was so nervous! #ivchat FreshRN @FreshRN Sounds like you had excellent clinical experiences! #IVchat NurseEducator Time is almost up!! #IVchat IVchat lucky you did !
