While China displayed a rise in the contribution towards patent application
filings globally, from 37.2% to 72.1%, India’s contribution decreased from
3.5% to 2.7% (From 1995-2009 to 2009-2011).
Patents Granted
There has been a large drop in the number of patents granted by the
Indian Patent Office because of a shortage of examiners as well as more
stringent examination guidelines.
Top patented domains (2012-13)
Among the various fields of inventions, ‘Mechanical’ received the highest number of
applications, although it witnessed a decline as compared to last year. On the other hand,
‘Chemical’ has been witnessing a steady growth over the past few years, and ‘Electrical’ saw a
sharp drop this year.
