  2. 2. My Background • Programming for water treatment plant SCADA systems • Engineering for industrial process equipment monitoring, control, and remote access • Presenting webinar as a hobbyist© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen. All rights reserved.
  3. 3. A Brief History of the Project • Constructed home between 2005-2007 • Desired to make it a “smart home” to increase value • Work in progress • Webinar helps to further the work© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen. All rights reserved.
  4. 4. Some Homes Are Smarter Than Others When does a home become a “smart home”? Device Integration me t Ho m ar S Number of Automated Devices© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen. All rights reserved.
  5. 5. Most Homes Include Some Automated Devices • Thermostat • Sprinkler Clock • Alarm System • Light Timer These devices are standalone and only represent part of a fully automated and integrated system.© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen. All rights reserved.
  6. 6. These Automation Devices Are Adequate for Some But… • All configure and operate differently • Have no central interface, not integrated • Offer no remote access • Do not annunciate events and alarms online • Lack historical data recording ability • Are not scalable, added functionality not possible • Are not as robust as industrial devices • Only represent a part of automatable systems© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen. 7. 7. Automatable Systems • HVAC Heating Ventilation Air-Conditioning • Security alarm • Video surveillance • Utility monitoring (gas, electricity, water) • Lighting • Sprinklers • Window and door coverings • Audio and video systems (low priority)© Copyright 2012 John Rasmussen.
