71 angel / venture capital / private equity deals were reported in Mar’18. Committed amount was just over USD 1.9 B, continuing the strong trend seen in recent months. In the first 3 months of 2018, USD 5.2B of investment has been committed. This is 28% more than the amount in the same period last year. The run rate in 2018 thus appears to be better than 2017, which itself was a great year for private equity investments in India. Blackstone was the lead scorer for the month, closing a USD1.4B real estate transaction, when it acquired two landmark commercial properties from Indiabulls group in Mumbai. Blackstone also reported another real estate deal, a USD46m investment in a mall in Pune. Leading infrastructure consulting group Feedback Infra pulled in USD 105m of investment from ADV Partners. Groffers, the second largest grocery etailer behind Bigbasket, pulled in USD62m from Japan’s Softbank, the eternal saviour of struggling Indian ecommerce players. Online grocery faces impending threat from Amazon and Flipkart, hence the investment in Groffers must give it a big relief. The leader in ready to stay home rentals, Nestaway raised USD51m from Goldman Sachs and Ratan Tata’s fund.
