My Analysis Supporting Images
Cinematography&
Camera
Techniques
The cinematographythatwasusedwithinthe filmcanbe
associatedtowardsthe genresitisconnectedwhichwould
make the genreseasilyrecognisable.Forinstance withthe first
shotwhichis an aerial establishingshotwhichwasusedtoset
the tone of the movie andto establishthe viewerinthiscity.
The directorusedthisscene specificallytointroduce the
settingof film;withthisthe audience isinformedwhere the
maincharacter as the protagonistisusuallyone of the first
majorcharacters we see thoughthisdoesnotinclude overall
cast. The waythe camera movesiswiththe use of a crane as
the camera elevatesasitpansto the right forthe camera to be
centerised,whichcontinuesintoatrack as ittracks towards
the city. This isto tell us as the viewerthe importance of this
settingandthat somethingiseitherhappeningorisgoingto
happen,thiscanbe backedupwiththe visual effectof the
explosionshappeningoninthe background. There isalsoone
more use of an establishingshotwhichisusedwhenKungFury
travelstoofar back intime and endsupin the Vikingage.
Thoughas opposedtothe firstestablishingshotwhichonly
consistedof one shot,thisone featuresmultipletoshowthe
audience howsubstantialandbaronthe surroundingareais
comparedto Miami. Tracking isa common style of shotwhen
usedinthe action sequenceswhenthe protagonistisrunning,
withthe filmadoptingthe ideaof a 2d side roller, the director
usedthisas it helpsupportthe retroandarcade feelingof the
film. The camerain the sequence whenKungFuryisfighting

KungFury
islockedto the characters movements. The use of close ups
can eitherbe usedtosignifyimportance inacertainobjector
be usedto expressacharacters expression.InKungFuryitis
usedforboth,whenKungFury resignsfromthe police,he
slamshisbadge it cuts toan extreme close upof the badge to
signifyitsimportance tothe plotsince KungFuryjustresigned
fromthe police;thiscreatesakeyturningforthe plot.Another
example of the close upcouldbe ona charactersface which
wouldexpressthe charactersemotionscomparedtoa medium
shot.In the example of KungFury, itsupportsthe previousshot
of a flashback as itrevealsthe charactersexpressionfromhis
previousdeadpartner,whichshowsusthathe is annoyedat
the fact of tryingto replace him. Previouslywasthe battle with
the Arcade Machine, there were manyshotsthat were used
but the mostnotable was the use of a High angle whichis
whenthe cameralooksdownon a certainsubject.Thisshot
was usedtomake the people lookpowerlesscomparedtothis
Arcade Machine since theyare unable tofightback. The most
commonstyle of shotusedin thisfilmis the use of a medium
shotas thisisnot toofar or too close to the subjectandwon’t
ruinthe setting.Thisstyle of shotiscommonlyusedduring
dialogue sequencessuchasthe scene where the Chief and
KungFury argue about the fightaboutthe Arcade Machine
whichcontainedmultiple mediumshots.Lastlyisthe use an
overthe shouldershotwhichshowsuswhatthe character is
lookingat,i.e.givesthe audience abetterperspective.With
the scene inKungFury it isimportantto the plotas thisisa key
character detail andshowsuswhere the protagonistreceived

Colour Scheme Since the filmisgoingfora retro80’s theme, the one thingthat
wouldhelpsupportthiswouldbe the visual style of the film.
Withoutthisvisual stylingthenthe filmwouldbreakthe
illusionthatitwasan 80’s retro science fictionfilm.Thisstyle
givesthe scenesalowsaturatedlook,whichgivesthe viewer
the illusionthatthey’re watchingafilmfromthe 80’s, which
the filmwantedtoachieve andsuccessfullyhave.
Genre
Conventions
The filmisa hybridgenre betweenscience fiction,actionanda
crime,all thiscomestogethertosuccessfullycreate an
interestingandengagingnarrative forthe audience toeasily
understand.There are manycode and conventionsthatare
usedwithinthisfilmtohelpsupportthe genresthatitcomes
under,firstlywouldbe the science fictionasthisisthe most
distinguishable outof all of them, thisisdue to the alternative
settingof realitywhichcontradictshistorical records,for
example howHitlertravelsintime to1980’s Miami.Thiscan
alsobe supportedwithuse of technologywhichcanbe seen,
such as killerarcade machine and time travel. The
cinematographyyouwouldexpecttosee isthe use of tracking
shotsand close upson the technology toemphasise
importance.Asforaction,the narrative consistsof the journey
of the protagonistashe setsout to try and achieve hisgoal,
youwouldalsoexpecttosee the use of explosionsandfighting
as thisIs usedto gripthe audience’sattentionandtocreate
dramaticsituations.The mainprotagonistisalsoa“normal”
character whoendsup discoveringahiddenpower/talentand
inthe case of KungFury, thisis whenhe becomesthe chosen
one,betterknownaskungfury.Anotherwayof definingthe
actiongenre ishow the mainprotagonistlosesa lovedone,
whichwouldbe hispreviouspartnerwhohe consideredtobe a
fatherfigure. Lastlyisthe genre crime,whichcanbe
distinguishedbythe use of the copoutfittingandthe setting

and howthe mainprotagonistisalsoa cop himself. The crime
genre usuallyoffersanengagingnarrativeforthe audience and
thisfilmisnoexception.One factorthatcan be accountedfor
ina crime genre isthe conflictbetweendifferentmodesof
policing,KungFurybelieveshe isabove the law butcauses
problemsforthe police, suchasincost of damagesdue to the
arcade fight.
Narrative For my firstanalysisIdecidedtoanalyse the ShortScience
fictionandactionfilmKungFury. Thisfilmfollowsasingle
linearnarrative structure whichisdifferentasopposedto
normal mainstreamfilms,thoughthisfilmishardlya
mainstreamfilm,more analternativeasitallowsthe director
to experimentwiththe narrative andthe plotdevelopment.
Usingthe three act structure, whichisusedtodivide afictional
narrative structure intoparts, I will analyse the plotand
narrative structure of KungFury. The setupwouldbe the
introductiontothe narrative,here we wouldbe introducedto
the mainprotagonistandthe worldaroundhim.Thoughthe
worldaroundhimappearsto be a dystopian80’sMiami which
comesundera lot of Crime, thiswouldbe whythe central
protagonistisa Police officersohe ison the side of good and
that he wantsto put an endto the crime goingon inthe city.
Withinthisact we are alsointroducedtothe mainantagonist
of the film,thisbeingHitler,the mainantagonistisresponsible
for causingthe disequilibriumbyshootingupthe police station
throughthe phone,thisisthe incitingincidentwhichsetsthe
plotinmotion. Thoughthisiswhat separatesthe filmfroma
mainstreamfilmasthere wasalreadyadisequilibriumpresent
at the start, thoughin the case of the filmthiswouldbe the
equilibrium. The secondactwouldbe where the majorityof
the filmtakespart,thisis where the protagonistfocuseson
tryingto restore the equilibriuminthe plot, soinorderto do
thiskungfury musttravel back intime to defeatHitler.Though

EditingTechniques There are manyformsof editingthatwere usedinthisfilm, the
mostobviouswouldbe the use of CGI, suchas the killerarcade
machine andthe laserraptor whichKungFury findswhenhe is
Vikingage. We can see thisisCGI as the use of Special effects
wouldnotbe as successful asopposedtovisual effects.It
meanswithvisual effectstheyare able topull of some amazing
sceneswithoutneedingtogoagainsthealthandsafetyoreven
include contentintoascene whichyouwouldn’tsee,the
example beingthe killerarcade machine.Ibelievethe use of
CGI doesn’tkeeptothe 80’s style inform of editingbutdoesin
formof the narrative structure.Asfor visual editing, mostof
the sceneswere eitherfilmedusingagreenscreenordone in
CGI as the majorityof these scenesdonotlookrealistic, and
that addsto the fact of the 80’s as the majorityof science
fictionfilmswere filmedinfrontof agreenscreen.The sound
isalso a bigfeature of the filmsoundeithermakesorbreaks
the scene,andfortunatelyforthe directoritworksinfavourof
the film,the use of non-diegeticsound(I.EMusic,sound
effectsandvoice overs) helpbuildthe illusionforthe audience
6. Short FilmAnalysis
KungFury
that the filmwasmade withinthe 80’s.The use of diegetic
sound(I.Esoundsincludedinthe scene,anexample of this
wouldbe the boomboxesincertainscenesandactors talking
make the scene) thisisa keyfactor for filmsaswithoutit,no
filmwouldbe successful.Lastlyisthe use of post-production
fitsperfectlywiththe scene,forexamplesome of the scenes
are made to appearthat they’re beingplayedaVHRwhichyet
againgivesthe viewerthe illusionthey’reviewingafilmfrom
the 80’s.
Title Credit Design The titlesare designedtofitthe style andsettingof the film
withthe use of the colourto standout, the fontspecifically
usedwithinthe film(whichisalsoused inthe title) iseffective
for the genre as itfitsthe Science Fictionsettingwiththe
additionof the colourredwhichsupportsthe actiongenre as it
suggestsDanger.The use of this fontisconsistentthroughout
the filmas if the fontwas differenteachtime thenitwouldfit
the filmandwouldseemoutof place.The colourred isthe
mostcommon as evenwithadifferentfont,itisstill usedto
helpsupportthe genres.One fontwhichstandsoutfromthe
restand is onlyusedonce isthe textfor barbariannawhichis
usedto helpsupportthe characterdevelopment,the textfont
helpssuggestthatthischaracter issomeone youshouldnot
