The Truth About Women, Power, and Money: It’s Probably Not What You Think - Barbara Atkinson

 1. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money It’s Probably Not What You Think

Barbara Atkinson, Founder

Arizona Cash Flow Club

 2. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

The Acid Test Question

When a woman’s success makes a man feel inadequate, he does what?

 3. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

#1 answer – He leaves

#2 answer – He gets angry and he leaves

#3 answer – He cheats

 4. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Some men, but never a woman, have answered “Why would he feel inadequate?”

About 25% of women, and on very rare occasion men, have answered “he beats her”, “he slaps her”, “he undermines her”, “he sets out to destroy her”.

 5. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

About 10 years ago Carnegie Mellon University Professor Dr. Linda C. Babcock paid students from $3 to $10 for their time to play Boggle.

After playing the game, each student was given $3 and asked if the sum was okay.

Eight times more men than women asked for more money.

 6. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

In later studies she found that women's reluctance to ask for more was based on an entirely reasonable and accurate view of how they were likely to be treated if they did.

Both men and women were more likely to subtly penalize women who asked for more. The perception was that women who asked for more were "less nice".

 7. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Social roles are sets of connected behaviors, rights and obligations that define expected behavior in a given individual’s social status and social position.

Those who do not act in a socially acceptable manner (do not conduct themselves within the parameters of accepted roles) receive social disapproval. Social roles are required for an orderly society.

 8. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

In Woman's Inhumanity to Woman , Phyllis Chesler said "groups of women tend to espouse an ‘illusion of equality’ and uniformity in which variations from the norm are seen as dangerous betrayals.

Because one of the biggest taboos is against any overt display of female aggression, these attacks are invariably covert, indirect and maddeningly unexplained -- which makes them especially devastating.

 9. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Primate research suggests that aggression among females can be as ferocious and even as murderous as the aggression shown by males.

A 1992 University of California study found that women’s aggressive behavior is widespread and displays regularities across societies.

 10. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Most women seem to be unaware of their engagement in oppressive acts toward other women and the ways in which they contribute to this oppression.

Social justification theory is the tendency among people in low status groups to internally regard the high status group more favorably than their own. They internally justify an oppressive social system to reduce the dangers of social conflict.

 11. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

In one large scale study of 46 meta-analyses conducted over the last 20 years, it was found that most cognitive abilities and psychological traits showed little or no average difference between the sexes.

 12. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

In studies where gender norms are removed, researchers demonstrated how important gender roles and social context were in determining a person’s actions.

Best-selling books and popular magazine articles that assert women and men can’t get along because they communicate too differently are wrong.

 13. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Through fairy tales women are still taught they’re princesses, someday your prince will come, you’ll be swept off your feet, carried off into the sunset, and live happily ever after.

Shows The Bachelor, For Love or Money, and Average Joe program women to believe compromising their integrity to “win a man” is not degrading.

 14. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Watchers of The Swan and Extreme Makeover which showcase female contestants who insist they need a new nose, teeth, or bigger breasts to have better self-esteem are programming themselves to believe physical beauty will bring them all the happiness they haven’t been able to find in themselves.

In 1995, 34% of high school age girls in the United States thought they were overweight. Today, 90% do.

 15. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

“Niceness” training:

Smile when you’re angry.

Sacrifice everything for others.

Maintain relationships at all costs.

Don’t complain.

Don’t make waves.

Fear conflict.

 16. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

Popular culture portrays women as ‘Greedy Gold Diggers’, ‘Publicity-seeking Prostitutes’, ‘Brainless Bimbos’, or ‘Back-stabbing Bitches’.

Popular culture pushes women to be as gross and callous as the most disreputable men while depriving them of the moral authority to admonish and correct male loutishness.

 17. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

In a world without ladies there cannot be gentlemen.

Men feel licensed to exploit women and become unable to cherish real women in committed relationships.

There are strong consequences in a world where men have no respect for women and women have no respect for themselves.

 18. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

So what is the truth about women, power, and money?

Money is power, plain and simple.

 19. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

If women having power (money) violates the confines of accepted cultural roles and associated stereotypes, do they put themselves in a position of social disapproval (attack) if they have power (money)?

 20. The Truth About Women, Power, and Money

If you:

Assert yourself as capable and competent.

Maintain fair and reasonable personal boundaries.

Insist on getting paid what you’re worth.

Is it worth the inevitable social conflict?
