  1. 1. THE UNIVERSE By:Cristina Fernández María Moreno and Blanca Iglesias 1E
  2. 2. • The universe is all the matter, energy and space that exists. • The Universe is made up of galaxies which contain stars. Stars can have planetary systems made up of planets and satellites. Galaxies are separated by vast spaces.
  3. 3. The Earth as far as we know is the only planet in which life exists. The average surface temperature of our planet is of -89 to 58ºC, the atmosphere of the Earth is consists of a mixture of gases, nitrogen and oxygen are the most abundant but there is also carbon dioxide. Is the only planet that water exists in three states(ice, liquid and water vapour) these variations make the water cycle possible.
  4. 4. Geocentric theory Heliocentric theory • In 1542, Nicolas 2nd centuryBC:Ptolomy proposed that the Earth copernicus proposed was the centre of the that the Sun was the Universe. That is,the Sun center of the Universe. Moon and planets orbited the Earth.
  5. 5. • Galaxies are a vast collection of stars dust and gases held together by the gravitational attraction between the components. They appear in groups called galaxy clusters. Scientists think the vast spaces between the galaxies are empty. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, belongs to the Local Group Galaxy Cluster. Here you can see a galaxy.
  6. 6. • Constellations are imaginary patterns of bright stars. All solstices have invented constellations. The Ancient Greeks invented the constellations we call the twelve signs of the zodiac. There are 88 official constellations. However, most of them do not really look like the mythical figures they represent. The night sky looks different in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The position of the constellations changes with the seasons because of the movement of the Earth.
  7. 7. • Stars form when clouds of gases are pulled together by gravitational forces. An enormous cloud of gas and dust , a nebula surrounds the stars.
  8. 8. • Planets are bodies wich orbit some stars. They do not emit light . They make up Planetary Systems. Our planetary system is the Solar System which is made up of eight planets and one star, the Sun, as well as Moons, comets an asteroids.
  9. 9. AU ASTRONOMICAL UNIT This is the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Appproximately 150 million km. LIGHT YEAR This is the distance light travels in one year. Light travels 300,000 km in one second or 9,5 trillion km in one year.
  10. 10. • Celestial bodies spin or rotate on an invisible axis. The invisible line is called the rotational axis. • The Earth takes to rotate 24 hours.
  11. 11. • Celestial bodies revolved around other celestial bodies. For example, the Earth revolve around the Sun, that is called revolution.
  12. 12. A curved path wich a celestial body follows in its revolution around another celestial body. The orbit of the earth arround the sun is an eclipse. The Moon orbit around the Earth. E EARTH Moon N
  13. 13. MER CURY VENUS • Mercury is 0,39 km from the sun. • Mercury takes 58,65 days to rotate. • The period of revolution of Mercury is 88 days. • Venus is 0,72 km from the sun. • Venus takes 243 days to rotate. • The period of revolution of venus is 224,6 days.
  14. 14. EAR TH • Earth takes 23h, 56m days to rotate. • The period of revolution of Earth is 365,25 days. MARS • Mars is 1,52 km from the sun. • Mars takes 24h, 37m to rotate. • The period of revolution of Mars is1,88 years.
  15. 15. JUPITER SATURN • Jupiter is 5,20 km from the sun. • Jupiter takes 9h, 55m to rotate. • The period of revolution of Jupiter is 11,86 years. • Saturn is 9,54 km from the sun. • Saturn takes 10h, 40m to rotate. • The period of revolution of Saturn is 29,46 years.
  16. 16. URANUS • Uranus is 19,19 km from the sun. • Uranus takes 17h,14m to rotate. • The period of revolution of Uranus is 84,07 years. NEPTUNE • Neptune is 30,06 km from the sun. • Neptune takes 16h, 7m to rotate. • The period of revolution of Neptune is 164,82 years.
  17. 17. INNER PLANETS Terrestial or rocky planets:the crust and the mantle are made of rock. MERCURY VENUS EARTH MARS This are the four plenets closers to the Sun,that are called inner planets. OUTER PLANETS Gas giants:they consist mainly of gases. JUPITER SATURN URANUS NEPTUNE This are the four planets farther to the Sun,that are called outer planets.
