Now that I’m a Graduate:
My degree and the
World
By: Idowu Adegbilero-Iwari

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti

At: LIS Dept., FUOYE, Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria
What it means
• You have successfully completed your schooling
• You have received, or, in your case, will be receiving a degree on
completing a course of study, as in a university
• You have been found worthy in character and learning
• You now possess A (not THE) Key to open possibilities and unlock your
potentials
• You are ready for the job market
• You are ready for higher degrees
• The society is ready to harvest the fruit of your learnings
• And, normally, should be now OYO (------?)
The Crisis of failed Expectations
But:
• The ideal job is not out there- “Most people entering the
workforce today will start with a two- or three-year series of less-
than-ideal jobs.”-
• The training misfit
• You barely escaped being caught, your character isn’t really cut
yet
• A higher degree comes with higher challenges (no resources,
siblings/family survival, etc)
• Unclear pathway to impact the society
• …
The Need of Transitioning
• Transitioning from school life to grad life may not be as smooth.
• 54% of graduates interviewed in a study described their transitioning
experience as: “Exhausted.” “Lost.” “Anxious.” “Everything’s a struggle.”-
Molinsky and Pisman of Harvard Business Review
• According to Quentin Mathys, a labour statistician at the ILO, the school-to-
work transition stages indicator classifies youth into three groups according
to their current state:
• – Transited
• – In transition
• – Transition not yet started

Two opposite worlds:
School
• Regular allowance
• Influential campus student
• Buzzing with lots of friends
• Unlimited freedom
• Fill in---------------------
Off school
• Expectation to fend for yourself
• Quiet job seeker/ pathfinder
• Virtualised friendship by SM
• Guided freedom
• Fill in -------------------------
A New World
• Always going to be a different world especially with technologies
“While the rate of innovation is increasing, the velocity of
obsolescence is growing even faster”
Technologies: the game changer?
• Data vs Information: unfortunately, information is what you studied,
data is what sells Today!
Data drives the digital space, information sort of Conduct for it such
that the following trending domains are powered by data:
• AI
• Augmented reality, Virtual reality
• Machine learning
• Data science
• Space exploration
The World and its Rising
technologies/Innovations
• 5G
• IoT/IoE
• Space Tourism
• AI
• VR/AR
• Wearable screens and devices
• Let’s quickly take a tour into the Future (Click on Future to see
emerging technologies that will change the world).

Today’s Library Job Needs
The Library world responds to techno-social changes in the real world and thus
changing with time and pace of world evolution.
Some of the job needs out there:
• Open Science/Open knowledge Librarianship?
• Scholarly Communication Librarianship?
• Digital Scholarship?
• Library IT- website/Apps development, network and database administration,
installation and customization of Library software?
• Robotics in libraries
• AI, VR, AR, linked data, big data, knowledge bases, discovery systems
• Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and/or Single Sign-On (SSO)
• Digital Library management and subscriptions issues
• Metadata librarianship
• BIBFRAME, RDA, MARC, RDF, Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) ???
Training Misfit? You as a Misnomer?
No! No! No!
But
I will show you a Room to always stay in:
Not the Othza room or the kitchen
…THE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Learning, Unlearning and Relearning
• Learning new skills
• Relearning with higher degrees
• Unlearning: detaching your mind from anticipations such as the Sense
of Entitlement or Entitlement Mentality
Tlostanova and Mignolo, once wrote “learning to unlearn in order to
relearn”
What of Digital Skilling?
• Digital literacy/skills
• Places to learn them: Digital Skills for Africa
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalskills
Your degree?
Stumbling block
• If you can’t do anything else
without the degree, boxes you in
Stepping stone
• Moving on with or without it
• Think beyond the box: think jobs that
don’t require your degree, they end up
paying more if money is your goal.
Social media management, SEO
optimization, copywriting, online
marketing and other IT-related jobs.
• Consider start-up
• Make contents
The Job Space is Global
• Explore glocalisation- think global, act local and vice versa
• Remember you are competing with:
• Private uni grads
• Grads from overseas
• Advantaged people- politics, background, etc.
But technologies raises the odds and your shot at success beyond 8am-4pm job
is guaranteed.
Think of time as SkiMe (Skit Time)- in 2-3 minutes Taaooma, Macaroni et al
release contents that are worth millions of naira.
You too can make so much in microminutes
Other things: talking of SkiMe
Startups
In closing, Now that you are a graduate
• Welcome to a point you will always be at … the intersection of what you
want to be and the degree in your hand that may matter more or less to
getting you there.
• But for the worth of their value, the following must remain your constant
companions:
Change: ability to learn, unlearn and relearn;
Goal: the target you are aiming at;
Network: the company that can determine your networth
Risk: the daring step you want to take, and;
Faith: in God and His grace (good luck) to cut the long story short or to
make the long story a tale worth telling.
If Elon Musk Colonises Mars
• Will he need a Martian Librarian?
• And Who will be the first Librarian in Mars?
Thus,
• Accept my best wishes
and
See you @ the Top!
