The free flow of data will bring a wide range of social and economic benefits to the EU. A critical element for its success will be the confidence consumers have in storing and exchanging personal information in the Internet Cloud. Business will need to reassure consumers that their financial, personal, buying habits, travel destinations, use of products and services and communications is safe and not being shared inappropriately. The new rules of the GDPR will provide a consistent level of protection to EU citizens but efforts by foreign and EU governments to access personal data in the name of public security can pose a risk for businesses and innovation. Companies may soon be forced to breach consumer trust and in turn may be potentially exposed to substantial administrative, monetary or even criminal penalties.
