A184_e2D / 3D Laser ScannerscanCONTROLCalculation of welded sheets on gas valvesThe quality of automated welding processes is criticallydependent on the precise positioning of the weldinghead and the weld seam under the welding head. Eventhe smallest deviation can greatly influence the resultingweld: time-consuming quality control, manual reworkingor even rejection of the part creates unnecessary delaysand costs to that company. Therefore, possible causes oferror in the automated welding process must be limitedas far as possible in order to keep process quality highand to minimise costs.Weld seams are usually placed between two work piecesor parts that can be freely positioned to one another. Wi-thout the use of a measurement system, precise positio-ning of the welding head can only be guaranteed by theexact positioning of the two parts relative to each otherand under the welding head. Yet even small productiondeviations of the two parts can cause defects in the wel-ding process. The 2D/3D scanCONTROL 2810 profile sensor provides Requirements for the measuring systema simple and reliable solution to this problem and also • Complete system accuracy of 0.15mmprovides very precise positioning of the weld seam for • Repeat accuracy of the weld seam position 0.03mmdifficult surfaces. In the application above, the position ofthe scanCONTROL sensor to the valve is initially measu- Ambient conditionsred eight times. Using this data, the laser welding head is • Clean and dust-free industrial environmentaccurately positioned for the seam. In a second step, thewelding head is guided along the welded sheet so thatany errors produced due to inaccurate part tolerancescan largely be eliminated. The company Elster GmbH is using the scanCONTROL2810 to position a laser welding head on valves with veryshiny surfaces. scanCONTROL is also located directlyabove the lens of the laser welding head. Initially, eachpart is traversed once by the sensor for two different weldseams. Using the serial interface, the position vector out-put from scanCONTROL is used directly to position thelaser welding head to the welded sheet. An accuracy of0.15mm is achieved for the complete system; the repeataccuracy of the position of the weld seam itself is accu-rate to 0.03mm. Therefore, the long term stability of thewelding process is ensured and reworking and rejectioncosts are eliminated.
