Eventhe smallest deviation can greatly influence the resultingweld: time-consuming quality control, manual reworkingor even rejection of the part creates unnecessary delaysand costs to that company. Therefore, possible causes oferror in the automated welding process must be limitedas far as possible in order to keep process quality highand to minimise costs.Weld seams are usually placed between two work piecesor parts that can be freely positioned to one another. Wi-thout the use of a measurement system, precise positio-ning of the welding head can only be guaranteed by theexact positioning of the two parts relative to each otherand under the welding head. Initially, eachpart is traversed once by the sensor for two different weldseams. Using the serial interface, the position vector out-put from scanCONTROL is used directly to position thelaser welding head to the welded sheet. An accuracy of0.15mm is achieved for the complete system; the repeataccuracy of the position of the weld seam itself is accu-rate to 0.03mm. Therefore, the long term stability of thewelding process is ensured and reworking and rejectioncosts are eliminated.
