A183_eEddy current sensorseddyNCDTDisplacement measurement in tribology testersAmongst other things, the Institute for Tribology and Ener-gy Conversion Machines (ITR) in Clausthal builds test rigsfor testing the physical limits of plain bearings. In doingso, ITR utilises eddy current sensors from Micro-Epsilonfor various measurement tasks. For example, a water testrig that simulates the friction forces on plain bearings forwater lubrication and a Hydropuls®-tester that adjuststhe load on automotive plain bearings has already beendevised. The tribological, flow mechanics and rotor dyna-mic characteristics of the plain bearings are tested usinga high-performance test rig, which obtains the maximumrotational speeds of the measuring shaft.The position of the test bearing case and the relative mo-vement between the rotor and the test bearing is detectedby the test rig using eddy current displacement sensors. Reasons for selecting the system:The bearing gap between bearing surface and rotor is - Very compact sensor designalso measured using eddy current sensors. The high - Very limited space installation optionsenvironmental compatibility of the sensors is also crucialfor the selection of eddy current sensors: oil or water inthe measuring gap, high temperatures or strong electro-magnetic interference fields.Sensors are located in the housing in order to measuremovements of the shaft. The sensors measure onto theplain bearing and monitor the lubrication film betweenhousing and bearing. Integration in the bearing is alsopossible, whereby the lubrication gap between bearingand shaft is measured. Here, the sensors are continuous-ly pressurised with water or oil.
