  2. 2. “Safety is a vehicle-level property and therefore a holistic and a systematic top-down approach is required in order to understand and manage battery safety performance and its interaction with the vehicle.” John Birch is a Functional Safety Technical Specialist with AVL Powertrain UK Ltd Dario Canevazzi is a Battery System Engineer with Jaguar Land Rover, UK. The search for a clean and green technology for the transport sector plays an important role to lower emissions and the consumption of fossil fuel. Which developments and solutions of battery systems for EV and HEV have the most potential to guarantee passenger safety, from your point of view? From a technical perspective, the solutions expected to help guarantee passenger safety are the development of increasingly stable cell chemistries and higher-performance cell separators, potentially coupled with a modular pack design to prevent propagation. From a process perspective, continued development in the understanding of the critical pathways between cell-level failures and vehicle-level effects will become increasingly crucial, allowing optimal placement and distribution of intervening barriers. What are the most important safety strategies of l ithium ion batteries to meet the regulatory requirements and at the same time improve battery pack design to maximize the functionality, durability and reliability on every cell level? One of the most important strategies is ensuring the optimization of the balance between passive and active safety from cell to vehicle level in order to most efficiently provide the necessary safety coverage whilst minimizing other attribute trade-offs. However, this can only be achieved with a full understanding of failure propagation pathways. How car manufacturer can try to implement safe battery management systems for high vol tage batteries to control temperature, extend lifetime and avoid battery failure?
  3. 3. The role of the car manufacturers is to define the interfaces, environment and usage cases of the battery. If this is done properly the tier 1 supplier is in the optimal condition to express its expertise and component specific knowledge. A holistic approach to safety offers the unique opportunity of identifying what is the most cost effective solution to achieve the highest level of performance while guaranteeing safety. The foundation of every safety analysis is a deep root cause analysis and a data driven approach. What are the advantages of lithium ion batteries concerning safety issues and how do you estimate the influence of mapping of vehicle-level hazards to high voltage battery behavior? Whatever the future of transport is some form of energy storage will be necessary. Each technology: Chemical, electro chemical, capacitive, kinetic comes with a specific set of pros and cons. The Li-Ion battery technology has the advantage of being already in a relatively mature state and with a vast user base in a multitude of consumer products. The aptitude of the OEMs to cascade vehicle-level requirements to component level requirements will be the key influence in the development of traction batteries. Which fundamental procedures do car manufacturers have to implement battery testing? How do you evaluate the outlook and expectations concerning automotive battery systems to ensure a safe transport solution for the future? The use of a well-balanced test program that goes over and above required legislative testing in order to evaluate vehicle-level battery safety performance is crucial. The test program needs to be designed to exercise the environmental conditions that the battery is expected to encounter in-vehicle and to capture vehicle-battery interactions. Market expectations are that vehicle and therefore battery safety levels will increase over time. This, coupled with increased penetration of electrically powered vehicles in the market place, requires ever more stringent safety demands to be placed on automotive battery systems.
