Optimize Your Virtualization Costs and Performance Through Capacity Management

Published on

Achieving the full gains of virtualization without utilizing effective performance and capacity tools is nearly
impossible. This session will show how capacity management addresses the challenges of virtualization and
will explore OmniVision, Systar’s proven capacity and performance management solution. Through its analytical
reports, OmniVision enables IT managers to reduce server infrastructure costs while improving quality of service.

  • The adoption of virtualisation and cloud are not necessarily the same though however pose some similar challenges. Despite virtualisation in the form of VMWares ESX being in produciton for 6+ years the adoption rate of virtualiastion is still pretty low. So when we talk to customers to ask them their views on cloud alike in most cases they have a number of business and technology challenges that they need and would like to address first Most customers that we initially meet are still within the first wave of adoption, virtualisation servers that have little strategic importance or are low value…. To support riding virtualisation wave into further adoptiona and value creation is where real business value can be dervived but si where most people hit a road block!
  • The technology landscape evolution, business and economic challenges/priorities have created a new set of challenges and priorities that we have to be concerned with on a business and technology level. Moving towards the adoption of virtualisation adoption and post adoption into virtualisation management has led to the re-emergence of real perfromance and capacity challenges. Gone are the days of 5 – 10% utilisation being acceptable, now our businesses (and rightly so ) are demanding 70, 80, 90% utilisation rates whilst deliver a level of business that is measured as being better than before….is this the impossible challenge? We like to think not ……. The right people process and technology, standardising on a centralise toolset aim at delvering the required business/techolngy outcomes ensures success. We want to move to virtualisation but how do we manage this migration?......how do we ensure that we do not simply oversize? People tell me that certain server types just aren’t suitable to virtualise……. Use a proven mathematical model and simulation based approach gathering historic data to accurately define you processing needs and server placement blueprint, each application within an organisation can have it own characteristics and resource utilisation profile, understanding this prescribes good candidates, ongoing management is essential to ensuring service quality and availability Consolidating platform data into a single visualisaton platform provides so much more value than the complexity of managing silo’d tools, creating a single version of the truth reduces the management overhead The explosion of the distributed platform, the LOB application growth, support staff employment growth caps have led to an increase in the support overhead with the server admin ratio being substantially higher, All to easy an excuse application problems can be pinned on the migration to virtualisation or be used as an obstacle to prevent the adoption of virtualisation – providing application level reporting, real-time insight, and playback functionality of application level performance and queuing addresses those concerns And finally we’ve virtualised and would like to virtualise more….what is our headroom to optimise and deliver cost avoidance?
  • top reasons for investing in performance management and capacity planning When we look into the USP’s of Systar as being: Shortest time to value Expert in delivering out of the box functionality addressing capacity needs Simplified implementation and management – reducing the admin “TAX” overhead Proven approach to driving capacity, within 3 months Business Quality of Service visualisation and assurance Next generation trending and simulation using historic and real-time data to project usage
