  • The first step is to use PowerRecon to collect data on the servers you have in the network. It will do a complete hardware and software inventory and collect valuable data on how your server workloads use data center resources over time.
  • Once PowerRecon has collected data on the physical servers in the network and the virtual resources you have available, it will create an optimized plan – the result of a highly sophisticated algorithm - that accounts for the way your workloads use resources – to ensure the DR plan will work.
  • In the next step, PowerRecon passes the plan to PowerConvert in the form of a configured set of jobs required to make the plan happen. PowerConvert can then be used to implement and refine the plan over time.
  • The first implementation step done through PowerConvert is a full system P2V transfer – a classic P2V migration. PowerConvert takes the OS and Applications and Data from the physical production server and clones the entire system in a Virtual Machine that it has created for you on the recovery server.
  • A key differentiator between P2V Recovery and other DR alternatives is the ease with which the DR plan can be tested. The user can very easily verify the integrity of the plan by leveraging the power of virtualization to take a snap shot of the virtual recovery server, power it on in an isolated, internal network and test it to ensure its functioning properly.
  • In the scenario pictured in the slides, three servers have gone down – in this case they appear to be on fire – one system is still functioning properly, perhaps it was in another rack. When systems fail, the data center is able to ‘one click failover’ to the warm standby virtual servers. Within seconds, the virtual recovery environment has taken over the service.
  • When it comes to failback – there are several options available to the user, The data center can find new hardware .. Perhaps a new blade server and pefrom a rapid V2P migration to move the virtual recovery server onto the new hardware where it can go on providing service. The data center could also decide that in fact, the server is running fine in a virtual state and just keep it running as is. Finally, the data center may be able to repair the original hardware issue that lead to the failure and do a rapid V2P migration to restore the server back to its original location.
