Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice for Resuscitation Teams

  1. 1. ALERT Presentation: Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice for Resuscitation Teams Daniel Lemke, MD, Cara Doughty, MD MEdBaylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital IMSH 2013: Orlando, Florida / USA International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
  2. 2. Background: RCDP &Traditional Debriefing • Traditional Sim/Debriefing: Allows for facilitated self exploration of issues encountered in a simulated environment • Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice: As Betsy Hunt described, a technique of bringing a team through a sequence of scenarios with directed feedback with repetitive practice. • We are conducting a pilot study with our PEM fellows and EC Nurses and RTs with PALS based scenarios. International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
  3. 3. PICO Question • P: Resuscitation teams • I: RCDP scenario sequences • C: Traditional simulation scenarios with debriefing • O: Team Performance in Simulation International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
  4. 4. Approach / Design Introduction to study and consent Division of teams Testing All Teams: Scenario 1, no debrief Teams A&B: RCDP: Scenario Teams C&D: Traditional Sequence 2&3 Scenario 2&3 with Debrief Testing all teams, scenario 1, wrap up the day 3 Months Later Testing all teams: Scenario 1, no debrief Teams C&D: RCDP: Scenario Teams A&B: Traditional Sequence 2&3 Scenario 2&3 with Debrief Testing all teams scenario 1, debrief the study International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
  5. 5. 2 Questions to improve study 1. What’s next? Increased learners? Multicenter? Different groups? Different learning objectives? Other Sim Outcomes? 2. Can this be linked to clinical outcomes? International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
