IMTD Professional Training Program

  1. 1.         The Professional Conflict Resolution Training Program At a Glance  Conflict  arises  on  a  daily  basis  in  many  aspects  of  our  lives.    Those  with  conflict  resolution  skills  not  only  have  a  better  understanding  of  how  to  deal  with  conflict,  but  they  can  also  achieve  their  goals  successfully  as  they  are  able  to  find  win-‐win  solutions  and  build  long  lasting  relationships.    The  Professional  Conflict  Resolution  Training  Program  at  The  Institute  for  Multi-‐track  Diplomacy  (IMTD)  gives  participants  conflict  resolution  skills  and  tools  they  can  use  to  overcome  conflict  in  complex  environments  and  help  build  constructive  ways  forward.    The  training  program  at  IMTD  is  unique  because  it  trains  professionals  and  communities  how  to  manage  conflict  effectively  through:   • Coordination  of  course  development  and  design  with  leading  experts  to  closely  match   the  needs  of  the  participants;  and   • Teaching  participants  how  to  apply  their  new  found  knowledge  in  real  world  settings   by  utilizing  examples  and  exercises  that  are  relevant  to  the  participants.    WHY  IMTD?  IMTD  is  uniquely  positioned  to  offer  this  service  for  several  reasons:   1. Leading  Expert  Network   Over  the  course  of  20  years,  IMTD  has  built  a  wide  network  of  conflict  resolution  experts   from  a  number  of  different  disciplines,  nationalities,  and  backgrounds.    IMTD  will  draw  upon   this  network  of  experts  to  design  and  lead  The  Professional  Development  Training  Courses   with  the  support  of  IMTD’s  staff.     2. Personalization:  The  Participant-‐Centered  Approach     Each  course  is  shaped  by  the  participants’  fields  of  study,  cultures,  ages,  genders,  needs,   and  goals.    Throughout  each  course,  the  participants’  needs  and  goals  are  continually   Email:  imtd@imtd.org  |  phone:  +1  (703)  528-‐3863  |  fax:  +1  (703)  528-‐5776   1901  North  Fort  Myer  Drive,  Suite  405      Arlington,  VA  22209  USA

Real  World  Application     IMTD  trainers  and  staff  will  utilize  a  variety  of  teaching  techniques  to  ensure  that  students   leave  each  course  with  skills  they  can  immediately  apply  to  resolve  conflicts.  Tools  may   include  the  use  of  lectures,  role  plays,  dialogues,  and  small  group  activities  centered  on  real   world  case  studies.     4. Understanding  the  Systems-‐Based  Approach  to  Solving  Conflict   The  systems-‐based  approach  to  conflict  resolution  is  a  comprehensive  way  of  resolving   conflict.    We  recognize  the  interconnectedness  of  various  individuals,  organizations,  and   ideas  and  how  they  operate  simultaneously  in  a  conflict  situation.    Moreover,  trainers  may   focus  on  topics  that  are  particularly  interesting  to  the  participants,  such  as  how  to  address   cultural  diversity  issues.  WHO  CAN  BENEFIT  FROM  THIS  SERVICE?  IMTD  and  its  network  of  experts  have  experience  training  professionals  from  various  sectors,  including  government,  business,  non-‐profit,  media,  academia,  and  religious  institutions.    Examples  of  potential  clients  can  include:   • Mid-‐to-‐senior  level  professionals  from  any  field  who  wish  to  enhance  their  conflict   resolution  skills;   • Organizations  who  want  key  staff  members  to  sharpen  their  conflict  management  skills;   and   • Organizations  interested  in  building  their  own  conflict  resolution  programs.  *  While  IMTD  offers  pre-‐scheduled  courses,  we  also  have  the  ability  to  design  courses  that  meet  the  needs  of  a  particular  business  or  organization.    Please  see  the  course  design  section  below  for  more  information  or  contact  us  to  speak  with  a  training  program  representative.      COURSE  DESIGN  The  design  of  the  training  program  focuses  on  either  transactional  or  transformational  conflict  management,  or  a  combination  of  both  depending  on  the  participants’  needs.     Transactional   Email:  imtd@imtd.org  |  phone:  +1  (703)  528-‐3863  |  fax:  +1  (703)  528-‐5776   1901  North  Fort  Myer  Drive,  Suite  405      Arlington,  VA  22209  USA
  3. 3. IMTD  offers  participants  transactional  conflict  resolution  skills  necessary  to  find  win-‐win  agreements  in  a  business  context.    Participants  will  learn  negotiation  and  mediation  skills  they  can  apply  immediately,  giving  them  the  ability  to  find  effective  solutions  to  conflicts  that  interrupt  the  peaceful  flow  of  business  or  everyday  life.      This  program  is  distinctive  from  other  programs  because  it  gives  participants  an  appreciation  for  an  interconnected,  networked  world,  showing  how  their  agreements  might  affect  or  be  affected  by  outside  forces,  which  will  lead  the  participants  to  seek  more  holistic,  comprehensive  solutions  that  have  a  greater  chance  at  lasting  for  the  long-‐term.     Transformational  Professionals  working  in  peace  and  security  will  learn  transformational  conflict  resolution  skills  necessary  for  systems  change  on  a  global  scale.    Unlike  other  programs,  IMTD’s  training  course  offers  a  holistic,  systems-‐based  approach  to  conflict  resolution  that  can  be  applied  immediately  in  extremely  volatile  situations.    Skills  include  understanding  and  managing  complex  systems  dynamics  and  the  transformational  process.   The  Transformational  Process:   1. Transforming  the  view/perception  of  the  adversary   2. Developing  mutual  understanding  between  conflicting  parties   3. Building  trust  between  adversaries   4. Reconciling  past  grievances   5. Negotiation   6. Creating  cultural  awareness    As  mentioned  above,  IMTD  has  both  pre-‐scheduled  courses  and  the  ability  to  work  with  individual  clients  in  designing  and  implementing  tailored  trainings  that  fit  their  needs  and  schedule.  Whichever  entry  point  into  the  IMTD  training  program  is  preferred,  the  process  for  course  design  and  implementation  will  follow  the  figure  below  (Figure  1).                     Email:  imtd@imtd.org  |  phone:  +1  (703)  528-‐3863  |  fax:  +1  (703)  528-‐5776   1901  North  Fort  Myer  Drive,  Suite  405      Arlington,  VA  22209  USA
