Humidtropics Strategic Research Theme 1 – Systems analysis and global synthesis: Presenting Activity 1.1 – Situational analysis

  1. Humidtropics Strategic Research Theme 1 – Systems analysis and global synthesis Presen;ng Ac;vity 1.1 – Situa;onal analysis Jean-‐Joseph Cadilhon*, Keith Child*, Jessica Raneri‡, Tim Robinson*, Steve Staal*, Nils Teufel* * Interna)onal Livestock Research Ins)tute ‡ Bioversity Interna)onal Objec;ves 1. Broadly characterize all important aspects of relevance to the Program within the target ac)on sites. 2. Inform all other Program ac)vi)es in the context of aDaining the Intermediate Development Objec)ves (IDOs), as well as ongoing field site selec)on. 3. Ini)ate and facilitate engagement with stakeholders and partners as part of the R4D plaOorm development that is needed for the long term success and scalability of the Program. Methods 1. Literature review from previous research and project reports on: • Development overview • Agricultural produc)on systems • Markets and ins)tu)ons • Natural resources management 2. Collec)on of secondary data from interna)onal sta)s)cal sources, na)onal sta)s)cs offices, past research and development projects 3. Analysis and synthesis of secondary data gathered to iden)fy main constraints to the systems 4. Focus group discussions with a cross-‐system selec)on of key stakeholders to validate the findings from secondary data analysis and gather sugges)ons on interven)ons of par)cular relevance to the systems under study Pictures Humidtropics coordinator of situa)onal analysis at ac)on site level (10% of staff-‐)me during six months) experts of local produc)on, marke)ng, and natural resources management systems to cons)tute a supervisory commiDee for the situa)onal analysis and undertake focus group discussions (one local expert also holds a Secretarial role for the commiDee) • Two na)onal consultants fluent in the na)onal language to collect and analyse secondary data and report on findings for local travel, sta)onary, focus group discussions, supervisory commiDee mee)ngs and final write-‐shop to produce the Links with other Humidtropics ac;vi;es • Constraints iden)fied and interven)ons suggested inform setup of integrated research-‐and-‐development ac)vi)es • Holis)c broad picture of inter-‐related components provides hypotheses for systems modelling ac)vi)es • Nucleus of stakeholders involved can seed the development of R4D plaOorms in the ac)on site • Key sta)s)cs cons)tute a baseline for monitoring contribu)on to IDOs across ac)on sites Resources needed • One • Ten • Budget situa)onal analysis report • Es)mated all-‐encompassing budget: US$70 000/na)onal ac)on site. Expected results • One 50-‐page report on the broad situa)on of the agricultural produc)on, marke)ng and natural resources management systems in the ac)on site • Data sets of secondary data compiled and available online • A set of key and comparable sta)s)cs on Humidtropics ac)on sites • Key stakeholders and development partners iden)fied and engaged to contribute further to Humidtropics ac)vi)es Jean-‐Joseph Cadilhon j.cadilhon@cgiar.org ● ILRI, Box 30709, 00100 Nairobi, Kenya.
