Objectives: • Share experiences and challenges in research on smallholder pig health, production and pork safety; • Discuss and explore gender aspects in pig and pork production; • Facilitate inter-country and intra-country networks on pig research including the South-South exchange; Regional symposium on research into pig production, health and pork safety, 27-29 March 2019

Regional symposium on research into pig production, health and pork safety, 27-29 March 2019 Call for abstracts: • Topics: • Pig nutrition/husbandry; • Pig health and improved diagnostics; • Zoonoses and food safety including antimicrobial resistance (AMR); • Social science, gender and equity in the pig value chain; • Developing a sustainable, affordable, welfare-friendly and safe smallholder pig value chain; • Interventions, successes and challenges on the above topics; • Format: Oral presentation/Poster • Deadline for submission: 21 Jan 2019 – late abstracts to be considered

Regional symposium on research into pig production, health and pork safety, 27-29 March 2019 Scholarships:  21 Jan 2019 - late submission to be considered • What to be covered? • Return airfares to Hanoi; Airport transfer; Symposium registration and meals; Accommodation (3- 4 nights based on flight bookings); • Who are eligible? • Live and work in a low or middle income country; • Have limited or no access to travel funding; • Be employed at a university, agricultural research institute, NGO, government department or agricultural agency; • Affiliation to an ACIAR-funded project is preferred; • Be eligible to obtain a Vietnam visa and able to travel to Vietnam. • What to be submitted? • One-page scholarship submission • CV • Abstract

Other One Health, AMR activities at ILRI 2018: H7NH9 surveillance • New study: H7N9 Avian Influenza surveillance in 3 Northern bordering provinces Lao Cai, Lang Son, Quang Ninh and Hanoi • Will sample air and human nasal wash (One Health) • Visiting 3 Sub-DAH • Main partners: Duke University, NIVR, HUPH • Funding by US Navy Map of study regions.

Other One Health, AMR activities at ILRI 201: SafePORK • SafePORK potential interventions to improve pork safety in Vietnam (funded by ACIAR, partners: VNUA, HUPH, NIAS, private sector) • Ozone machine at slaughterhouses/ informal market • Good ‘nudges’ to change behaviour of actors • Reduction of AMU and AMR in pork supplied to canteens and schools by using probiotics

Other One Health, AMR activities at ILRI 2018: VIDAPIG • VIDA-Pig project: Health and Antibiotics in Vietnamese Pig Production in Bac Ninh (led by Copenhagen University, in collaboration with NIVR and NIN, funded by DANIDA) • Progress meeting at NIVR Tuesday, 4 December 2018 • Project is on track
  11. Other One Health, AMR activities at ILRI 2018: Parasites • Research on tackling parasitic pork borne diseases (funded by BMZ, main partners: NIVR, Hoa Binh sub-DAH) • Training in Hanoi and Hoa Binh on diagnostic and analysis of parasites
  12. Other One Health, AMR activities at ILRI 2018: other activities • MM project progressed fine • Continued works on One Health AMR surveillance and other One Health analysis in Thai Nguyen (Marisa, Trang, Narong)… • Hepatitis E virus in animals and humans with Rakuno University • CGIAR AMR hub at ILRI Nairobi, Kenya and Vietnam will be a focus country, launch 20-21 February 2019 in Nairobi and key partners from Vietnam will be attending
