1. Key 2019 activities
• FireOak review of ILRI Informatics and CKAN/CGSpace Evaluation for FAIR
Principles (Jan 2019)
• ‘Open’ stand during Institutional Planning Meeting to raise staff awareness (Sep
2019); Updated guidelines/handouts, posters, presentations, blogposts on
making ILRI research including data open
• Awareness campaign during international open access week (Oct 2019)
• Presentations to wider audiences (Open Repositories Conference Hamburg,
Knowledge for Development African Partnership Conference)
• ILRI received 2019 International Knowledge Management Award
• 86 % of 1221 outputs (ILRI and Livestock CRP) in 2018/2019 are open access
• 2018 scientist performance reviews require output lists from repository
• Continuing CGSpace coordination with partners (technical hosting; metadata
quality; content curation; Altmetric subscriptions). AfricaRice joined this year.
• CG Core v2 schema implementation testing (clear list of fields to delete, create,
modify etc. on GitHub)

2. Challenges and solutions
Challenges:
• Ensuring that all staff (including communications staff) are aware of open
access/open data and related policies, guidelines and workflows
• Budgeting costs of open access and publishing and data workflow into
projects
• Ensuring software and code for digital tools and applications is open
• Ensuring data have sufficient metadata
• Sustainability of CKAN data and tools portal
Solutions:
• Internal OA/OD/IA task force of senior managers/scientists and disciplinary
leads champion and push this work
• Open apps exchange session planned later in 2019
• Datathon planned for Livestock CRP including both ICARDA and ILRI projects
• Move ILRI open data to Dataverse and tools to CGSpace

3. 2020 plans
• Finalize CGSpace explorer (and reporting)
• Finalize Dspace-Drupal ‘open’ module (also to refine author
profile on website)
• Upgrade CGSpace repository to version 6/7
• Complete global update records on CGSpace with dc.rights
metadata (include usage rights for each record)
• ILRI tools to move from CKAN to CGSpace
• ILRI data to move from CKAN to Dataverse
• ILRI Digital Transformation analysis (to be confirmed with BDP
Leader Brian King)
• ILRI Organisational Assessment across many areas including
Informatics; includes FireOak review (completed in Jan 2019)
