Livestock and Fish in Asia

  1. Livestock and Fish in Asia Program overview The program aims to increase the productivity of small-scale livestock and fish systems in sustainable ways, making meat, milk and fish more available and affordable across the developing world. The program’s approach is characterized by a whole value chain approach, with focus on selected livestock and fish systems that can be transformed; partnering for impact at scale; and research and technology development designed to have sustainable impact. It focuses on ten selected value chains: dairy in Tanzania and India; small ruminants in Ethiopia, Mali and Burkina Faso; pigs in Vietnam and Uganda; dual- purpose cattle in Nicaragua; and aquaculture in Egypt and Bangladesh. Research themes cover animal feeds, breeding and genetics, health, value chain development, gender and learning, and targeting sustainable interventions. Vietnam Focuses on smallholder pig value chains. Projects • Integrated indigenous pig systems and value chains. Scoping study evaluating the potential to improve livelihoods of ethnic minority smallholders in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. • Multi-scale assessment of livestock development pathways in Vietnam (REVALTER) • Vietnam pig sector model (VPM) updating • Gender issues in adoption of best practices in pig production • Improved forage-based livestock feed systems for small farmer livelihoods in the Cambodia-Laos- Vietnam Development Triangle • Nutritious-system feeding concept; nourishing Vietnamese ponds to produce quality seafood Study sites Dak Lak, Dong Nai, Son La, Nghe An, Hung Yen Project partners The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), universities and research institutes, nongovernmental organizations and other development agencies working in the country. Pictures Bangladesh Focuses on small- and medium-scale aquaculture value chains. Projects • Feed the Future – Aquaculture for Income and Nutrition. Benefitting more than a million households through better fish and shrimp farming practices and seed quality leading to improved household income, nutritional status and rural employment. • Aquaculture and the poor: Improving fish production, consumption and nutrition linkages. Securing the supplies of and access to farmed fish for vulnerable consumers, particularly women and children. • Market development for quality feed production in Bangladesh. Upgrading the feed production practices of fish feed producers to improve commercial feed quality. Study sites Twenty districts in Southwestern Bangladesh Project partners National agricultural research and extension systems, nongovernmental organizations, local and international commercial companies, and other development partners working in the country.
