Faida Mali implementation progress and project Highlights

  1. Faida Mali Implementation progress and project Highlights Nisefori Mkwama Presentation for Maziwa Zaidi Review & Planning Meeting: 23- 25 September 2015
  2. Presentation outline  Introduction  Achievements  Challenges  Lessons learnt  Next steps
  3. Introduction  Activities conducted from June to September 2015: • Training the farmers & services providers on milk production, bulking and collective marketing by c/off system B2B methodology. • Linking producers to potential service providers (Vety drugs, animal feeds and AI services). • Conduct participatory market research for milk and business meetings btn milk buyers and producers
  4. Activities conducted cont… • Identification of MFIs which can work with Milk producers and service providers. • Mentoring and Backup support of Check off and B2B systems.
  5. Achievements:  Currently 25 B2B and check off transactions have been signed by 16 groups,Lushoto (all groups), Handeni (Kwediamba, Kweditilibe and Masatu), Mvomero (Manyinga, Mangae and Mela), Kilosa (Ulaya Kibaoni and Ihombwe Mfilisi). Details from table attached.  A rapid market study on milk bsn was done in the project area - identified vendors at village level who were ready to enter into contract with producers.  Reputable FIs and MFIs have been identified in the Project area, also willing to collaborate with producers (e.g. Vision Fund, Covenant, FINCA, BRAC, CRDB and NMB).  Meeting between milk producers and traders was conducted to agree on milk supply quality and quantity including price regimes. Mentoring and Backstopping of B2B and check off operations was conducted in the project areas, and the transactions tracking tool was introduced distributed to the buyers to keep records.
  6.  Informal marketing of inputs mainly Vety drugs and services delay B2B operations in some groups.  Low consumption of milk hinders market of milk.  Cheap imported powder milk threatens the milk market in the area. Accessibility of improved dairy cattle remains a challenge to producers who opted to purchase them. Challenges
  7. Input sales of Vety drugs at Mbwade Auction centre as seen in the market by 19th Aug. 2015.
  8. Lesson Learnt There is high demand for AI services, however low income to producers hampers Operationalization. However, Lushoto (Particularly Mwangoi) initiative can be emulated (savings as collateral). B2B and check off systems are new concepts to most of farmers and service providers, so close coaching and mentoring are required to make it operational.
  9. Lesson learnt Cont…  If bylaws prohibiting informal sells of inputs (drugs) can be enforced it can reduce the number of unprofessional practitioners hence reducing disease resistance, promote efficiency in drugs use and B2B btn service providers and producers.  Promotion of local consumption of milk will stimulate more production and marketing.  Demand for improved cows is on high surge and farmers are ready to buy - (Covenant Bank ready to provide loans to cattle keepers in Mwangoi).  Coaching and mentoring needs more than one season for ownership and sustainability.
  10. Next steps  Continue formalization of B2B and check off system contracts to the remaining groups in the project area.  Conduct mentoring and backstopping of formalized check-off and B2B contracts to the groups.  Implement September to October 2015 activities as per plan, in conjunction with B2B and Check off systems.
