DSpace Helps Make Information “F.A.I.R”
• Free: no subscriptions, “paywalls”, etc
• Accessible: is publicly available
• Indexed: can be found in search engines
• Reusable: has a permissive license
What is DSpace?
• Open-source software package for creating
digital repositories
• Driven by demands to have all outputs and
products available and accessible
• Stewarded by DuraSpace with input from the
user and developer communities
• Not a “library” management system
The Road to “CGSpace”
• Before: InMagic, physical library
• 2009: ILRI launches Mahider—meaning
“repository” in Amharic
• 2010: Other CGIAR research centers and
programs join our platform and share costs
• 2011: Rebranded as “CGSpace”
• 2015: 8 CGIAR centers, 5 CRPs, ~50,000 items,
~200k visitors per month
ORCiD For Author IDs
• Open Researcher and Contributor ID
• Attempt to solve the “name ambiguity”
problem:
● Alan Orth
● Orth, A
● Orth, A.S.
● Orth, Alan
• ORCID uses unique identifiers
• Alan Orth→0000-0002-1735-7458
Increasing Visibility With CGSpace
• Primary location for institutional outputs
(No posting PDFs on corporate website!)
• Integrate with external websites like Google
Scholar, Research Gate, Facebook, Twitter,
blogs, etc
(Direct ALL traffic to CGSpace!)
Top authors, their co-authors,
collaborating institutions, and CRPs
they work in

Editor's Notes
CGIAR-produced data, information or knowledge assets
– Benefits should be able to travel across boundaries
– Need to be described and stored for posterity
– Should be easily found & accessed
– Should be shared & re-used
– AAA: Available, Accessible, Applicable
Sticks and carrots, evolve or die, paradigm shift.
