Maziwa Zaidi review & planning meeting
31March – 1 April 2015 at Giraffe Ocean View
Hotel, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
INTRODUCTION
FM continued activities implementation from
January to March 2015.
Sensitization and establishment of B2B
(linkages to service providers) and check off
system.
Milk collection, bulking and marketing.
Identifying possibility of improved cattle
availability for dairy cattle keepers.
Sensitize and train producers, input suppliers and
milk traders to improve collective milk collection,
bulking and marketing by check-off system and dairy
hub model; Total 20 groups: = 8 (Lushoto), 6
(Handeni), 4 (Kilosa) and 2 (Mvomero).
Link producers to potential service providers and A.I.
Services. 27 linkages have been initiated, of late 15
linkages (B2B) been formalized (contract signed) and
operating in Lushoto.
Cattle keepers requests (demand for improved dairy
cattle); a quick survey has been done in Arusha,
Manyara and Kilimanjaro Regions of which 7 farms
were ear marked having improved dairy cattle for
sale. Breed types, age and indicative price were also
provided.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Road access to reach the groups in the field is a
challenge to both the service providers and not so
attractive to investment - mainly in the wet season.
Inadequate awareness of the lucrative business
potential underlying B2B to the various groups in
the project area.
Inadequate supply of A.I. services to improve
the genetic potential of the dairy herds due to low
capacity service of most of the providers (Except Handeni).
CHALLENGES
LESSONS LEARNT
There is high demand for A.I services, however
low capacity hampers Operationalization. So,
Project should think of capacitating some group
members so they can deliver service.
For quick results; A.I. services can go hand in
hand with purchasing of dairy quality breed.
B2B exercise is a new concept to most of
farmers and Input suppliers, so we need to
make close coaching and mentoring to make it
sustainable.
LESSON LEARNT CONT……………
According to survey FM conducted to 3 Northern
Regions of TZ there is a lot of potential of dairy
breeds which can be linked to cattle keepers -
purchase.
There is enough source of variety of pasture seeds
which cattle keepers can be linked – to be
purchased.
The Project to synchronize the price of semen in the
project intervention area. In some places a tube of
semen ranges 3,000/=- 10,000/= where as in some
areas within the same project area it ranges from
15,000 - 20,000/=
ADVANTAGES TO BE REALISED BY DAIRY KEEPERS BY WORKING WITH
B2B & CHECK OFF SYSTEM.
To enable members to access some of the subsidized
quality farm inputs & services timely (eg. Acaricide,
vaccines etc).
Members will access professional technical advise
from some of the service providers (E.G. Vety and
induced A.I. Services etc).
Well selected and contracted service providers with a
reasonable working network assuring prompt services
(E.G. Bajuta inter, Handeni vety etc).
ADVANTAGES Contin………………….
Participatory Development of The Members Request
Form, The Draft Contract And The Working Calendar
For Effective Service Provision In The Dairying Field.
Information Flow Clarity And Sharing Between The
Main Stakeholders In The Project Being Improved So
As To Be Sustainable In The Future.
NEXT STEPS
Conduct follow up of cattle keepers inputs
requirements.
Continue formalization of B2B and check off
system contracts for the remaining groups.
Link cattle keepers to access improved dairy
cow breeds.
Conduct mentoring and backstopping for the
formalized B2Bs contracts and involve the main
stakeholders to sustain & operationalize.
END
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!
