Dairy Genetics East Africa Field Activities

  1. Baseline survey on ~3,000 cows.
  2. Objective: quantify production and productivity levels and capture farmer and cow characteristics that are invariant
  3. Will also include survey input and services suppliers.
  4. Longitudinal survey (each farm surveyed every 2 months)
  5. Focus Group Discussion
  6. Objective: farmers’ assessment on breed and provide avenue to provide feedbacks to farmers
  7. Snp assays data of ~ 2,000 cows to determine their breed composition
  8. In each site, 31 randomly selected “clusters” of 5 farmers on average
  9. Selected famers keep at least 2 lactating (or in- calf) cows/ heifers, either cross or pure breed; but no more than 10 heads of cattle
  10. Cow characteristics: age, breed, parity
  11. Milk production at peak; at time of survey
  12. Reproduction and fertility data
  13. Feed
  14. Breeding services
  15. Animal health services
  16. Cost- benefit analysis data
  17. Put some $ figures on all benefits and costs
  18. Capture non-market benefits (e.g. cattle as store of wealth)
  19. Risk- to derive risk-adjusted net revenues. Different genotypes generate different risk levels (e.g. mortality, seasonality).
  20. Livelihood and gender:
  21. intra-household allocation of benefits and “costs” (labor in particular)
  22. gender- disaggregated data, including preference for genotypes
  23. Access and use of breeding services
