Introduction
Dairy sectors all over the world are challenged by expanding
populations and economic growth. Growing demand for dairy products
has led to a significant increase in public and private involvement.
This creates opportunities for a range of stakeholders and calls for
shared language, objectives, and strategies. The framework presented
here was developed to assist stakeholders in designing and
implementing dairy development strategies in emerging economies.
Methodology & outputs
Highlighted: Typical dilemmas in dairy development
When moving from analysis to action (step 4), stakeholders will have to deal with many
dilemmas encountered in emerging economies and developing countries.
Typical dairy sector development dilemmas are:
a. To invest in the formal or in the informal dairy chain?
b. To focus on dairy imports or on local milk production?
c. To rapidly or steadily increase milk production?
d. To develop the local herd or to import grade cattle?
e. To link smallholders to formal dairy chains or to establish large-scale farms?
f. To start from improving agribusiness or from improving the business climate?
g. To focus on sustainability now or later?
h. To take human nutrition as starting point or as outcome?

African Dairy Conference and Exhibition

The regional Dairy Expert Roundtable Meeting on “Competitive Dairy Value Chains in Southeast Asia” provided a forum for participants from six Southeast Asian countries to discuss how dairy value chains in this region can become more competitive and sustainable. The demand for dairy products in these countries is increasing steadily. Countries rely more and more on imports. Inefficiencies in the chain, low productivity, quality issues, as well as institutional obstacles make locally produced dairy products less competitive. International developments, national policies and experiences, lessons learned, and challenges in the value chain were presented and discussed during the meeting. Many countries in the region face similar challenges. Solutions depend much on the local context. Better exchange of experiences and knowledge among the Southeast Asian countries can contribute to more efficient local dairy value chains. Case Study Synlait Milk is an innovative dairy processing company that has experienced remarkable growth in a tough dairying environment. Since beginning manufacturing operations in 2008 Synlait Milk based in mid-Canterbury has grown its revenue to $759 million, its supply base to more than 200 farms and its staff to more than 550 people. Synlait Milk has performed very well on the back of global demand for safe, reliable, protein-rich foods. The company processes more than 700 litres of milk a year to produce a range of infant and adult nutritional milk products that it exports to more than 40 countries (Synlait, n.d.). Synlait was created by dairy farmers Barry Dingle and Juliet MacLean in partnership with John Penno, a senior scientist at Dexcel, the dairy industry’s research centre. Rather than supplying skimmed milk powder to Fonterra the trio were looking for ways to increase the value of the milk they produced. In particular, they were keen to develop innovative added-value milk products. Their vision was to build Synlait into a “major supplier of high-value, hightechnology ‘milk components’ to food producers worldwide.” (Oram, 2006). Synlait began in 2000 as a corporate farming business with the purchase of Robindale farm, one of the largest farms in New Zealand. By 2005 Synlait owned eight farms and in 2006 the decision was made to establish a manufacturing plant to produce innovative milk products. A growing customer base and considerable resources in milk powder production resulted in early growth for the company. As Synlait moved beyond ingredients manufacture to becoming a significant global supplier of infant nutritional products, Bright Dairy of China became a significant shareholder in 2010 (NZ Herald, 2010). To date Synlait’s strategy has focused exclusively on manufacture by selling select products to leading global food companies that own strong brands (Skellern, 2016). Alongside world-class processing facilities, Synlait Milk has established strong relationships with key players across the entire value chain including milk suppliers, market distributers and key customers, such as A2 Milk Company. Two key planks of Synlait’s strategy are its differentiated milk supply and its manufacturing excellence. Firstly, Synlait differentiates its product at the production stage through breeding and feeding technologies. This enables it to produce products that satisfy individual customer requirements. Secondly, Synlait’s specialist manufacturing facility allows flexibility to meet a range of individual customer specifications. Synlait listed in 2013 on the NZ stock exchange (Berry, 2013) and has experienced impressive growth, recording a net profit after tax of $38.2 million in 2017 up from 34.4 million in 2016. Synlait won the Deloitte Top 200 Best growth strategy for 2016. In 2016 Synlait announced plans to raise $98 million for a $300m expansion programme over the next three years including increasing its infant formula manufactur.

Here are some details about it: Location: The Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, east of the Mariana Islands. It stretches for about 2,550 kilometers (1,580 miles) and is known as the deepest part of the world's oceans. Depth: The trench reaches incredible depths, with its deepest point known as the Challenger Deep, which plunges down to approximately 10,984 meters (36,037 feet) below sea level. To put this into perspective, if Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, were placed at the bottom of the Challenger Deep, its peak would still be over 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) underwater. Formation: The Mariana Trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Mariana Plate. This process creates a deep trench as the heavier Pacific Plate is forced beneath the lighter Mariana Plate. Geological Features: The trench is characterized by steep, V-shaped valleys, and its walls are composed of highly compressed sedimentary rock. At the bottom of the trench, there are also large amounts of marine sediment. Pressure: The pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench is immense, reaching over 1,000 times the pressure at the surface. This extreme pressure creates a challenging environment for exploration and makes it difficult for organisms to survive. Exploration: Despite its extreme conditions, the Mariana Trench has been the subject of numerous scientific expeditions and explorations. One of the most famous explorations was the dive to the Challenger Deep by Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh in 1960. More recently, in 2012, filmmaker James Cameron made a solo dive to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Deepsea Challenger submersible. Biological Discoveries: Despite the harsh conditions, the Mariana Trench is home to a surprising variety of life forms, including unique species of deep-sea fish, crustaceans, and microbial life. Some organisms have adapted to survive in the extreme pressure and darkness of the trench. FAIRSpectra - Enabling the FAIRification of Analytical Science

Ultrasound color Doppler imaging has been routinely used for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, enabling real-time flow visualization through the Doppler effect. Yet, its inability to provide true flow velocity vectors due to its one-dimensional detection limits its efficacy. To overcome this limitation, various VFI schemes, including multi-angle beams, speckle tracking, and transverse oscillation, have been explored, with some already available commercially. However, many of these methods still rely on autocorrelation, which poses inherent issues such as underestimation, aliasing, and the need for large ensemble sizes. Conversely, speckle-tracking-based VFI enables lateral velocity estimation but suffers from significantly lower accuracy compared to axial velocity measurements. To address these challenges, we have presented a speckle-tracking-based VFI approach utilizing multi-angle ultrafast plane wave imaging. Our approach involves estimating axial velocity components projected onto individual steered plane waves, which are then combined to derive the velocity vector. Additionally, we've introduced a VFI visualization technique with high spatial and temporal resolutions capable of tracking flow particle trajectories. Simulation and flow phantom experiments demonstrate that the proposed VFI method outperforms both speckle-tracking-based VFI and autocorrelation VFI counterparts by at least a factor of three. Furthermore, in vivo measurements on carotid arteries using the Prodigy ultrasound scanner demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to existing methods, providing a more robust imaging tool for hemodynamic studies.
