Challenges of Dairy Development
Mobility of the Fulani (cattle) herders
Lack of potable water, earthen dams and
irrigation systems
Lack of infrastructure (road network, power etc.)
Lack of good quality pastures and grazing areas
Dairy farming/farmers not organized
Lack of sufficient full service milk collection centres and quality control
facilities
Lack of state regulation of markets with regard to quality standards
and control
Ineffective disease monitoring, evaluation and control
Inadequate farmers’ support services like Artificial
Insemination (AI), veterinary services, farm
mechanization service, and extension services
Lack of reliable data collection and management
Challenges of Dairy Development
Low genetic potential of local
breeds
Suitability of individual animals
further limited by poor feeding at
young age
Reluctance of Fulanis to accept
modern and more efficient dairy
farming systems.
Insufficient availability of improved seed of adaptable
varieties of pasture, and arable crops
Poor reproductive health of cattle herds
Limited availability of by-products
especially protein rich
oil seed meal
High cost of milk collection,
quality control and transport
systems
Poor education and language
barrier
