AReS and Altmetrics: How we use them at ILRI

  1. 1. AReS and Altmetrics: How we use them at ILRI Abenet Yabowork International Livestock Research Institute Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Developers’ Retreat Nairobi, Kenya 3-6 December 2019
  2. 2. Agricultural Research e-Seeker (AReS)
  3. 3. Team: ILRI, ICARDA, WorldFish, IITA, CodeObia
  4. 4. Background • Repositories such as DSpace, CKAN and Dataverse does not present content in a visual way • Need to facilitate integrated insights from the repositories containing tens of thousands of items from across the CGIAR centers, research programs and partners • To provide new way to access content across different repositories and offer more value from the content that is already available
  5. 5. Agricultural Research e-Seeker: What it is • Content aggregation tool • Combines different content types and sources using compatible metadata and standards (CG-Core, DC) • Harvests multiple repositories (CGSpace, MELspace, FISHspace) • Will ultimately include other repository types e.g. Dataverse
  6. 6. ….AReS • Explores and visualizes content around different - metadata fields - content collections and categories - search queries • Shows relationships between different metadata filters • Navigate single/multiple repository content in visual ways
  7. 7. …..AReS • Generates reports for queries • Visualizations and reports based on content from different repositories can be exported • Enhances content discovery for users, facilitating analysis, learning, reporting and decisions
  8. 8. …..AReS • Has public usage data from DSpace and Altmetric • Preserves original repository configurations • Exposes inconsistencies • Configuration of the Open Repositories Explorer and Visualizer (OpenRXV) - Standard tool for public usage – open source contribution for the Open Repositories community https://github.com/ilri/OpenRXV
  9. 9. Explore…. https://cgspace.cgiar.org/explorer/ 1. What research did ILRI work on dairy in east Africa in the past 10 years? 2. How many ISI journal articles ILRI’s animal and human health program produced in 2018/19 3. What percent of ILRI’s research was funded by BMGF in 2019?
  10. 10. Plans for 2020 • New ToR to improve AReS and OpenRXV - additional reports for different users and use cases - improved filters, icons, text, erroneous values in exports etc • Promote the tool more widely
  11. 11. Questions?
  12. 12. Altmetrics
  13. 13. Altmetrics: What they are • Are complementary metrices to traditional, citation-based metrics alt + metrics • Are data that can explain about both the volume and nature of attention research receives online
  14. 14. Altmetrics: CGSpace item page Bibliographic info Information on social media, news outlets, policy documents etc. Bibliographic info
  15. 15. Altmetrics: AReS sort by
  16. 16. Attention score • Quantitative measure of the quality and quantity of attention research outputs/scholarly articles received online • Is a weighted count (derived from an automated algorithm) • Useful to rank research outputs based on attention (it can't tell you anything about the quality of the article itself, though reading the linked discussions might)
  17. 17. News outlets & Blogs • Over 2000 news sites • 9,000+ Blogs Social media Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Public posts only Reference managers • Mendeley, Citeulike etc • Reader counts Other sources Scopus Citations Wikipedia Youtube Reddit F1000 Q&A Policy documents • FAO • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change • Many more… Sources of attention
  18. 18. Why we use altmetrics on CGSpace? • Apply to more than journal articles and books • Show how often our research are discussed and used around the world (indicating influence and impacts) • Quicker to accumulate
  19. 19. How are research tracked by Altmetric? Publicize research using a handle/ Digital Object Identifier (DOI) An output published on CGSpace (journal article, book, poster etc) It has an identifier attached to the output (DOI/handle) Mentions in a source eg. twitted
  20. 20. Always look at what people are saying And NOT just at the numbers Attention doesn’t = quality Think of Altmetrics just as one tool to understand research impact For reporting….
  21. 21. Altmetric Explorer • Make it easy for you to search, filter, sort, save, analyse and export Altmetric data for reporting • Help you to quickly see highlights of attention for your research output Login: www.altmetricexplorer.com
  22. 22. 8 minutes video about the Dashboard Source: Information about Altmetrics is derived from https://www.altmetric.com/ and their reusable training slides
