  1. Better lives through livestock Gender considerations in livestock and animal health Alessandra Galiè and Zoë Campbell, ILRI a.galie@cgiar.org z.campbell@cgiar.org ILRI – OIE Online meeting March 2022
  2. Why gender considerations in livestock development
  3. 3 Gender dynamics affect livestock development • Gender roles in livestock enterprises along the value chain => gendered needs/preferences; opportunities • Gendered capabilities to engage in livestock enterprises => assets/time to invest; access to info/services • Gendered access to benefits from livestock => who makes decisions; markets; controls income Gender dynamics affect adoption of livestock innovations
  4. 4 Livestock development affects gender dynamics New technologies affect division of labour and sharing of benefits… Who are we supporting? And who are we disadvantaging? Livestock innovations affect gender dynamics
  5. 5 Gender equality for livestock development Livestock development for gender equality Research Question 2: How do livestock technological and institutional solutions affect gender relations? Research Question 1: How does gender (in-)equality influence the effectiveness of livestock technological and institutional solutions to support livelihoods? Overall frame of our work
  6. 6 Focus on women and their empowerment Evidence is that women:  represent the majority of poor livestock keepers However, they have limited:  control over livestock resources  access to information, extension, financial services, markets  Livestock intensification/commercialization => women lose control of livestock products and income If women are disempowered livestock development will lag behind Focus: support the empowerment of women in livestock
  7. 7 2 types of gender research at ILRI Strategic: entry point is gender analysis i.e. how can livestock empower women? how can a transformative approach increase women’s access to vaccines Integrated: entry point is a technical pillar i.e. is a gender-responsive vaccine better adopted? what are the diseases prioritized by men and women?

  10. About 620 ILRI staff work in Africa and Asia to enhance incomes and livelihoods, improve food security, and reduce disease and environmental degradation. Australian animal scientist and Nobel Prize laureate Peter Doherty serves as ILRI’s patron. Organizations that fund ILRI through their contributions to CGIAR make ILRI’s work possible. Organizations that partner ILRI in its mission make livestock research for development a reality. www.ilri.org This presentation is licensed for use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence.
