  5. 5. 5 BIOGAS DIGESTERS Digester sizing
  6. 6. 6 APPLICATIONS
  7. 7. 7 APPLICATIONS
  8. 8. 8 APPLICATIONS
  9. 9. 9 BENEFITS Advantages of biogas digesters •Produces clean source of energy, methane gas that can be used for cooking purposes, lighting, water heating and to generate electricity •Digests organic waste (from the kitchen, garden, sewerage, animal manure, etc.) •Produces organic compost as waste product (in liquid, slurry or solid form), this can be used to grow vegetables.
  10. 10. 10 BENEFITS Advantages of biomass gasifiers •Produces clean source of energy, producer gas that can be used for heating and to generate electricity. •Uses readily available renewable energy resources. •Can be used for establishment of community based projects such as the one at Melani village.
  11. 11. 11 TYPICAL COSTS AND RISKS •Biomass gasifiers costs about R15-20 000 per kVA installed. •Biogas digesters cost about R5000 per m3 installed. •The risks depend on individual projects and the business model employed. •Limited to areas/households with biomass resources.
  12. 12. 12 FUNDING EXAMPLES OF FUNDERS •Eskom development foundation •IDC •DBSA •World Bank •Ford Foundation •Bill and Melinda Gates foundation •USAID •Private companies-Shell etc •Government-National Empowerment Fund, NYDA, SANEDI, ECDC, etc
